Tandoor Oven
Submitted by big john on Sat, 2011-06-18 21:59
A couple of weeks ago the better half found a website in Aus that sells portable tandoori ovens. We'd been looking at homemade ones online for a while but never got around to making one.
Anyhow's, to cut the story short, we ordered one and it turned up this week.
Fired it up today for its maiden cook, and we weren't disappointed, the tandoori chicken was awesome. Looking forward to doing plenty more with it, including making the naan breads to go with the chicken etc.

Very fancy way to cook chicken, looks bloody good but. How would you use it to cook naan, our pizza cooker makes some pretty nice naan.

Traditional
The traditional way milsey, the raw naan is pressed against the inside clay surround of the oven. It sticks there, cooks and is removed with a hook type utensil.

That looks awesome big John,
That looks awesome big John, I love Indian cuisine & I reckon the old Go Go's Madras Curry House lamb cutlets done in the tandoor oven have to be some of the tastiest morsels going.
Do you mind sending the link to that mate, the missus would do backflips if I picked one of them up as a surprise!

I've been thinking about building one myself but if they can be boguht like that, it might save me a lot of messing around...
Do you mind me asking how much it cost and/or where you got it from?
Thanks,

looks great Big John but
looks great Big John but you'd want to eat a lot of tandoor to pay that bad boy off. Would fish or cray pieces work?

Anything decent costs money luckytim. Best thing is I'm living in a climate where outside cooking is a year round thing.

Hey there big john, I
Hey there big john, I thought I was the only sea dog out there with one of these tandoors! Also got mine from Tandoor Living. It's been a cracker. They cook great Indian tucker, but don't stop there. I have used mine to cook the best american cut spare ribs, with a great chargrill flavour (also great roast pork using the grill). I prefer to use charcoal over heat beads though. Just last week I also got a pizza kit for the tandoor from the guys at Tandoor Living and have made some great pizza as well, nice crispy base and all!
That chicken you cooked up looks a treat too - mind sharing the recipe?
I'm not much for deserts, but me mrs got me to try this sweet spiced pineapple recipe to cook in the tandoor. It was actually really good - you should give it a go. The recipe is on the Tandoor Living web site under their "recipe" section (www.tandoorliving.com.au) - I think its called "spiced tandoori pineapple".
Cheers
