Tap Tap Prop shaft

 Hi all

I have a 115 Etec, recently had a gearbox rebuild, probably only done 10 hours since. Prop shaft was bent.

So been out a few times no hassle, only tonight after just a small outing, come home to flush the motor with muffs and turn her on to her a tap tap tap, down around the bottom of the gearbox..turn it of and when I rotate prop, you can hear the gears meshing, alsoo there is play in the prop, I can wiggle it side to side.

Been one big fuck up after another as motor is not that old, guys that serviced it for first few services told me some water in oil but didnt pick up on bent shaft.

Took it to Chivers last time who did the rebuild..

Thoughts ??

 Thanks Swompa

I wasnt to concerned about that in a way but wanted to know if its normal so thanks. The knocking or tap tap noise down there whn its running has me worried somthing needs adjusting or wasnt done correctly on rebuild

Get it checked out

Being out on the ocean and having something go wrong with the drive end of your motor would not make for a good experience.

Your comment "I can wiggle it side to side" is a cause for alarm bells to ring It is possible both of these things may be connected. Don't forget that old saying a stich in time saves 9, or something like that.

Will get it checked

As I first stated, I was pissed of with issues, and previuos services.. I have to state that it wasnt with Chivers who did a great job. Im hopefull its just some adjustments, and Chivers has kindly and promptly offered to give it all a once over for no charge. Which is both good news and great service. So I will keep you up to date as to any issues or what was needed so anybody in the future may use it as a guide

Mine's a 90hp etec...

....eight years old now and has never made a noise like that...sounds a bit of a worry.

On another note, and probably unrelated, do yourself a favour and only run it on premium unleaded if you're not already doing so!

gear selector.

Sounds like the gear selector needs adjusting a touch. Just not going all the way out of gear.  A friend of mine bought a new box from the US it was way cheaper than aussie rebuild. That was when the dollar was good though about 2 years ago.

Simple fix

Sun, 2015-11-15 09:17

Took the boat to Chivers yesterday, and straight away the boys were on to it. Simply an adjustment of the gear selector cable.

Like most boat owners, I don't know the inner workings of my outboard and I don't fiddle with it.. I leave it to the experts. If I had of messed around I have no doubt I would of made a simple fix worse.

And also upon hearing the noise in the lower unit I initially basically panicked and thought, "great more money".

So lesson learnt, leave it the pros, and Don't jump to conclusions.

Thanks again Chivers, you have my future business...
