Teleflex No-Feedback helm

Has anybody had any experience of these? I only just came across it in an old post here fishwrecked.com/forum/boat-steers-hard-right  , go down a bit and it is mentioned. They are a direct replacement for the normal teleflex cable steering helm.Part no SH 4910P. They run a clutch that holds the steering in whatever position you leave it, you can apparently leave it to run straight , or a slight curve, whatever. If it works as described, it would be bloody useful in getting the lures out, then trolling. You need to break the clutch grip each time you need to move it , apparently, so it is a bit of an effort if you are running a small wheel, no problem with a larger wheel.

Kits are expensive in Australia, CH Smith have them for about $450 with cable ( which I don't need, mine is near new), but I can see one on ebay from the US which will ship for A$165.

Pros and Cons

If you fell overboard with the old system, the boat would circle you until it ran out of fuel. With the new system (like mine) its bye bye. cheers Pete.

Best thing I ever did. Feels a lot like hydraulic without the price tag. I bought my kit from all boats and caravans was the best price I could find in Oz. The kits work out pretty much the same price if you buy from US with delivery. There is a few different versions and different ratios.

How hard is it to change direction in a hurry?

Sun, 2016-02-28 19:04

Say, for example, you are running a high speed slalom through the shallows inside the reef, how hard is it to " break" the clutch and change direction? I really like the idea of being able to have it run in a straight line at low speed when leaving the helm while running a trolling pattern out which would be my main need, but it won't make it hard to change direction in a hurry at speed?

 It is absoluteley no

Sun, 2016-02-28 19:47

It is absoluteley no different to normal cable steering. You wouldnt no any difference except the steering doesnt pull or move when you let the wheel go. You only notice it if you drive someones boat with normal cable steering and remember what it was like, some boats are awfull. It is awsome being able to let the wheel go at low speed and has very minimal creep no worse than hydraulic .After having it for the last 2 years I would highly reccomend it if you cant afford hydraulic it feels quite similar.

I have had a score

Tue, 2016-03-08 04:02

Trolling the net last night for the best price for one, as I have done a few times, and a new entry on ebay came up. From a new boat dealer in Melbourne, brand new unit, removed from new boat as customer decided he wanted hyrdaulic---$112 posted, including bezel but no cable ( which I don't need)--Result! Didn't stayte whetner a 3 or 4.2 (turns) didn't really care.

Parcel arrived--that was quick!

Fri, 2016-03-11 08:19

Arrived and fitted yesterday, very straightforward, except that the bezel is too deep, due to the thick dash on this boat. So fitted it without, I'll source a suitable one elsewhere. Went to sea this morning, very impressed. A bit "firmer" than the old setup, but it certainly will run straight with hands off if required. Mate who was out with me and drove said it feels very much like his Hydrive hydraulic setup on a similar size plate ali to mine pushing a 90hp Honda. Good result, especially considering the price.

Sounds like this is the solution I have been looking for.

I can leave the helm and walk down on the port side of the boat no worries but if I venture onto the starboard side ......... within a couple of seconds my boat has decided to do a u turn. So annoying when trolling on my own.

Will be investing in one of these for sure as everyone seems pretty happy with them.

Cheers for the info.

Yes, straight swap

Sat, 2016-03-12 08:40

Cable plugs straight in, same mounting system. They haven't changed that ( apart from the actual method of securing the cable end) for decades. Older ones, like the one I just replaced, had the 1/4" bolt and nut securing the helm end, newer ones have the clip in fix, but the cable end is identical. You 'may" have to re-drill the holes for the mounting bracket, the really old ones like mine bolted straight through the body and the dash, anything more modern has a separate bracket. If you have the bracket, holes are probaly the same. It was a very easy changeover.

  1. Remove the wheel. This is on a taper and keyway, spray some inox in at the back of the wheel, back the nut off to the end of the thread with a socket, tap the end of the shaft and nut with a hammer as you apply some force to pull it off the taper. One handed force shifted mine, and it hadn't moved since 1983.
  2. Undo the mounting bolts
  3. Unclip/unbolt the cable end ( depending on model) If it uses the clip, pull it out of where it sits and use it to push in through the little hole you can see right near where the cable goes in. This will release the clip, there could be a tag attached to the clip showing the process. If not, there will be one on the new unit, leave it on for reference. If it uses the bolt, a 7/16" AF spanner, undo the one nut and bolt and pull the bolt out.
  4. Slip the wheel back on the taper and wind it to back the cable  out. If you have plenty of working space behind the dash, this can be done before Step 1 above. if not you'll need to have the helm free to get the cable in/out without risking kinking the inner.
  5. Check if the mounting holes for the new unit match up. If not, use the new bracket for a template and drill.
  6. If you have to wind the cable in with the helm free, slip the wheel and keyway back on and put the cable end in, then wind the wheel to pull the cable into the new unit. MAKE SURE YOU HEAR A DEFINITE CLICK WHEN THE CABLE OUTER GOES ALL THE WAY IN. The cable is then locked in place. if youi can do it with the new helm bolted up, same thing. If it hasn't clipped in, when you turn the wheel the other way, the cable will back out. it's either locked in, or it isn't.
  7. Bolt every thing up, job done. If the wheel comes off easily and the holes don't need redrilling, it'll take 30 minutes.

I managed to buy one today

Sat, 2016-03-12 17:44

I managed to buy one today and it was a simple swap like Ranmar said, only took about half an hour and all done !!

Looking forward to seeing or should I say feeling the difference.

I have already discovered that when working on the motor I can't turn it anymore by pushing the motor and have to climb up and move it by the steering wheel now

Yeah, I found that too.

Sat, 2016-03-12 19:11

Only downside i've seen. Went out on the mates' previously mentioned 20ft Westerberg with the Hydrive steering today to pull the pots . I reckon the hydraulic is slightly heavier, turning a 90hp Honda, but the overall feel is very much the same.

I recon I can live with having to use the wheel each time.

If I get a similar feel as a hydraulic setup on my F115 then I will be very happy and the best part is you get that feeling at a fraction of the cost

Hopefully might get out tomorrow for a run.

Very happy

Sat, 2016-03-19 19:33

Well I finally managed to get out on the water today which is the first time since I installed the NFB helm and straight away I was happy.

Gone was the constant "fighting" with the wheel and I could let go at any speed and she was as steady as a rock....love it and will never own a boat again without it

The feel when turning the wheel was smoother/easier due to the lower gearing.

I would definitely recomend these to anyone who doesn't have it or anyone thinking of hydraulic....small to mid sized motors ....this is the answer.

you blokes still happy with the NFB helm?

im about to bite the bullet and buy one since my old cable and steering unit has started to give me grief.

im going to buy new cable along with NFB which will hurt a little more in the pocket but will be piece of mind.

Yes, very happy with mine

No complaints of any kind, would certainly recommend. Just  being able to take your hands off the wheel for a moment without having it wanting to full lock , very useful when running the lures out when you are trolling or even travelling at speed on a nice sea.

Tue, 2016-12-27 19:37

 Yep for sure

The cable price is the same so the only difference in cost will be the NFB helm which is not a lot extra.

Well worth it in my opinion and once you have one I can guarantee you will agree !

Wed, 2016-12-28 11:31

 Yea mate.

I picked mine up from Midway Marine, they had one which was removed from a new boat to install hydraulic steering.

It was brand new and a little cheaper than a new in the box one. Can't remember exactly how much it was though.

When I was looking for one

Wed, 2016-12-28 12:07

When I was looking for one my searches were not getting me far and was hesitating buying one online.

I called into Midway for something else completely unrelated to steering and just happened to see it sitting on the floor under a shelf, I

asked what they were doing with it and next thing you know I am walking out the door with it a happy man.

Good luck
