tell me your fuel useage

 Hi fish-heads

I have a Poly frontier 599 with a 175 opti. Love it. Rides amazing, great to fish out of.

Done a number of trips out 60k area off shore, caught some decent fish and am having a hoot.

When I check my smart guages as I'm belting along say 4000rpm around 40-43km/h (sorry bout the lack of 'knot' terminology), I'm covering between 1.5 and 1.9km/L, depending on conditions. I think this is pretty good for a 940kg hull, fuel etc........

I only head out that far when the conditions are nice (got a young bloke to look after...10y.o), so I am sure I could do these trips safely in an ally around the 5m mark, with a 90/100 hp four stroke or opti/etec.

Would I use much less fuel in such a craft?

I'm thinking hard about this as I also do a ningaloo station trip each year and would like to take something other than my dinghy. A lighter boat to tow, that I wouldn't have to cart an additional 200L of juice.

Or would I not get much of a saving.

I'd love to hear from you guys some fuel useage figure, some real life examples, to see if I'm dreaming or not.

Cheers, Craig.

not sure

Tue, 2013-03-05 10:47

I have a 115hp Optimax on a 6.1m Quimtrex.

I dont know what it does when zooming along but overall it averages 1nm per litre.

It has returned the same average over the life of the combo since we got it in 2004.

I am pleased with that.

Your figures look pretty good to me especially for a 175hp outfit doing around 4000 revs.

 Thanks Terry,

Your average is about what I get when conditions are nice. 1nm is 1.85 km.

Cheers.

Got a 5.0 metre all 4mm plate ali with a 60 Etec, do a trip to the islands with about another 10-15nm running around  for a total of nearly 80nm and use approx 40-45litres,

That includes two big 100kg plus blokes a big ice box 6-7 bags of ice, heaps of gear and plenty of fish on the return trip, travel at around 20-22knots depending on conditions.

took the tinny out the other day. headed north from barri to the sandpatch (3mile) trolled then headed another mile n half north into shallows on the lumps (beach hehe) then headed up to baldface in shallows (another 5.5mile north) headed back 5mile then out west 7mile then trolled all way back to river mouth broadside to 20knt sw. use 17 litres of fuel on a tohatsu 25hp 2stroke. amazing fuel economy from a 2 stoke but have always loved tohatsu's.

if you use your boat a lot you will notice the savings. our last boat we put in about $110 worth of fuel every trip, now its only filling up a 25 litre jerry can every month! Using the dinghy every weekend travelling about 18km i use less than 10 litres of fuel.

I'll do some sums.

Regularly fish an area a measured 19nm each way plus a number of drifts of perhaps .4nm so call it 40nm in total , - the pivotal issue seems to be sea and swell which greatly impacts on consumption but best in really good conditions = 59 litres and worst in crappy conditions both ways was 91 litres but generally in average conditions 70-71 litres ( just randomly checked my receipts just to make sure on volumes ) - oddly the coowner of the boat always uses at least 10 litres more so trim of the boat is clearly critical

Always filled until the breather gurgles fuel so the measures are accurate

Believe the conversion is 1.852 km = a Nautical mile so a round trip of 74 kms so an average of 1km per litre

On our last trip to the Abrolhos, I covered 213km and used 198L of fuel.....1.07km/L. My boat was pushing a heap more gear than I needed, but being my first trip to the islands, I took too much gear (as you do on your first trip). My main tank holds approx. 170L and I had another 6 jerry cans of fuel and 2 jerry cans of water on the deck....besides my dive gear, 4 cylinders, fishing tackle, esky, food, etc.

My last couple of trips out from Mandurah have seen me cover 75kms and use around 50L per trip....1.5km/L. Obviously pushing less gear but cruising on around 23kn and 4200 - 4400 revs, depending on outboard trim.

regards
rusty...

Tue, 2013-03-05 22:17

I have a 4.8 metre plate ally with 60hp 4 stroke Yamaha on the back I did 9 days in exmouth at Christmas time and used 80 litres. This included trip to the islands, trolling from north to south passage, and the shoals inside the gulf plus a hell of a lot of running around. Used the boat every day not sure how many Km's I did though. I did do 55 mile of two rocks about a month ago and used around 30 litres. Usually cost me between $40-50 of ultimate every time I go out.

Not really relevant to your scenario, but I have a 5.2 glass cuddy with a merc 115 2 stroke.  Hilary's to rotto, burn around to a few spots.  I usually sit on 25 knots or so, and use about 40L for the day.  I have no idea how far I'm travelling in total, but my fuel economy seems reasonable for a 2 stroke..  Seriously hanging out of the day I can get a 6m with a 4 stroke though.   Sucks having to shout every time you want to talk to someone.

8m Fury console, 2.5 tonne, twin 140 Johnson 4stks... 1.7ltr per mile for both engines. So .85ltr per mile per engine or there abouts. 1 mile = 1.852kms.

Standard day out for us would be 45 mile, so i would budget 90 ltrs worst case weather, but likely to only use 76ltrs

1990 6.3m Caribbean Reef Runner with 1998 Optimax

Using around 1L per km...  Thats based on only a few times Ive taken her out.. Cruising anywhere from 20 to 30 knots... 3000 to 3800 rpm.

But she is a heavy fibreglass hull... Carrying 200L esky full of ice and beer!!!

Usually hauling 2 to 3 blokes averaging 90kgs each..

Still not exactly sure how big my tank is... but I think its only around 150 - 160 Liters....  Biggest downfall really... I need another 2nd fuel tank installed to increase my range!!

MY little tub gives me 2km/l. Did a 40km trip over bunbury and was a tad under 20L - includes flushing the motor too. another one was 28km for 13L. So I base it on the 2km/l and all is sweet.

Didnt want to answer this til we'd done few island runs

Twin Suzi DF115's

over 3 island trips this year between 110 and 125 nm fuel burn has been 170 litres (measured) to 220l (dipped).

difference being i think in how much trolling/cruising on on engine.

Each time loaded with 6 people (4 or 5 kids)
