Temporary beach ramp

This may be of interest to those who regulary beach launch - or don't launch because of difficulties. I stumbled on this stuff a couple of weeks ago - not new to me as i used to sell it about 15-20 years ago. It is called Geoweb and it is expandable HDPE sheeting. The sheet in the picture is 100mm deep and expands to 2.56m wide and 6.52m long - once filled with sand it will easily take the weight of a big boat and tow vehicle - i am told 2.5 tonnes is no issue. If you are looking at a week or two somewhere remote a few panels of this would give you a decent beach ramp that will fold back to - i think from memory adout 1200 x 600 x100mm and i know i used to be able to throw a panel into my Magna wagon without problems. When you head home, pull it up and take it with you.

It looks like some the products that are on the market for 4wd recovery situations.

Thats a really cool idea. Simple materials, but used well. Though I am wondering how much it costs...

Also, being PE, would that mean it floats? What would you do at the waterline? (perhaps it just fills with sand and doesnt tend to move though?)

I was given

a price if i read the email correctly of about $170 a panel including GST. I know it works as i sold a couple of panels to a guy who used it up at Leeman and loved it - also some to the Army who used to reinforce sloped banks at Northam - that was quite a few years ago. The early brochures used to show 15 ton trucks driving over 150mm panels in what i believe was the Sahara. You have to put geofabric under it and a few inches of sand over the top for heavy use.

just to hold it open when you fill it with sand - and you would have to be a Bulldogs tragic to hit a stake that size - Old Easts forever!!

Could just use some U shaped

Could just use some U shaped pegs, make them out of galv or stainless steel, something like 8mm or so. Then when hammered in, they'd only be a small bump and no danger to tyres.

Though, having stakes might help as you should be trying to stay on the ramp anyays :p
