yeah these jobs aren't just

yeah these jobs aren't just handed out to people on the street so you really need to offer them something most people don't have. Ring WA Maritime Training Centre (Challenger Tafe) in Freo and chat with them about some courses you can do, or ring the companies themselves and have a chat about cadetships and if they offer them.
Try Bhagwan Marine as well.

While you're waiting, try to get some sea time- ferries, charter boats, cray boats. It all helps when you are one of hundreds of people sending resumes each year.

Stcw95

Go and do your STCW95, thats what a lot of the blokes up here are doing to get offshore.  Well, from what I hear the ones in Exmouth won't take you unless you have it .

STCW95

Son Jeff was looking to do the same, getting a job on the rig tenders, and was told to get the stcw95 plus riggers and dogman tickets, this is over and above the Master 5 and MED2 that he already has. He did that and has given up trying because the jobs are few and far between.

You will get certain

Fri, 2010-11-05 08:26

You will get certain training with a cadetship including STCW certifications , but remember that there's some pretty qualified people applying for these jobs so the more stuff you can bring to the company to make your resume stand out from the pack the better. STCW courses cost around $2500, a lot I know but it will pay off pretty quick if you get a job.
This is your starting point:
http://www.challenger.wa.edu.au/SiteCollectionDocuments/Short%20Courses/Workplace%20Skills%20Development/Maritime%20Training%20Centre/Certificate%20of%20Safety%20Training%20_STCW95_.pdf

As for your logged sea days, go out and get your coxswains ticket, it won't mean much on a rig tender but it's a start towards bigger tickets.
You really need to be proactive here, approach the companies, ask them for advise on what courses to do, tidy up the resume, present yourself well and don't expect a job straight away. Most guys had to climb the ladder and it takes years- marine deck and engineering qualifications don't come easy.

Like being a Pilot

Mate you have to do your appenticeship.

I have friends that want to be airline pilots, starting off by flying in Derby, broome, Crop Dusters, Mustering what ever they can get to get their flying times up.

As Lucky Tim says;

While you're waiting, try to get some sea time- ferries, charter boats, cray boats. It all helps when you are one of hundreds of people sending resumes each year.
