thinking of a trip

 hi guys,

thinking of a good fishing trip but am only 12 and the whole family is useless at fishing. We live in Bull Creek (perth metro) and dont know good places for fishing. We need to know an all right spot, good rigs, bait and of coarse the fish we would catch.

Kalbarri, great spot to learn to fish.

Tue, 2013-03-05 19:35

If you are still learning to fish your best bet would be to fish from either the beach or a Jetty,

fishing from Rocks can be frustrating even for experienced anglers as you tend to lose alot of fishing gear

and in some situations very dangerous.

I have two boys 10 and 12 that learnt to fish Kalbarri, plenty of options there, the Jetty and Chinamans Beach are great places to start.

You will catch plent of Tarwhine which is great fun for a younger fisherman with the potential to catch Mulloway,

Tailor, Rays, Cod and Shovelnose sharks.

Alo Bremer Bay is another great spot with plenty of options such as Beach, River and Estuary fishing.

Heaps of Bream in the rivers and Salmon etc from the beaches.

If you are fishing for bream or Tarwhine a simple running sinker with a 1/0 to 3/0 hook and a whole prawn

baited tail first will do the trick and get you started.

Also you will generally find most fisherman are more then willing to help young anglers, if you see someone

catching fish at your holiday destination go and politeley ask what rig and bait they are using and I am sure they will offer you

some helpfull tips.

Good luck and hope you and your family catch some fish.

Lancelin? 1hr 40mins North of Perth. Stay the night as it is a great family trip. Fishing off the jetty at night will pull you; Tailor, Sharks, Rays, Herring, Garfish and many others (I have caught king George and snapper).  Fishing landbased in the day will catch very limited amounts of fish unless you have a boat but there is lots of fun family things for you and your family; Windsurfing, Surfing, Sand dunes, Jetty Jumping, Kite Surfing and lots of others. Great fun up there. If I am up there and you are, I will take you out on my boat.

 Swan and Canning rivers down

Tue, 2013-03-05 21:23

Swan and Canning rivers down the road from Bull Creek isnt to bad on the right times and tides.

I personaly find the top of the incoming tide fishing from just before sunset to about 10pm the best sometimes later using prawns (Coral prawns cut and peeled or river prawns) on a running sinker rig.

Rockwood jetty and the banks between Canning bridge and the deepwater point boat ramp not to bad as a starting point with small bream and the odd size 1 or 2.

Also Melville beach in Applecross I have caught tailor and lots of bream (the tailor in my pic were caught here). This area is good using bait and and lures (its the only place I have caught anything on a soft plastic).

Look on Google maps at the river and find any jetty or any banks with weed and sand areas in close as the bream like weed beds and structures like jettys, markers, bridges and morings.

Fishing after dark will help reduce the amount of blowies you catch

Hope this helps

Brendon

 thanks sideshow. forgot the

Wed, 2013-03-06 07:33

thanks sideshow. forgot the name of the long bridge with stone pilons holding it up (not the narrrows bridge) and there is a jetty next to it. It is known for its useless results but you can see fish that are aabout 50cm wondering around in packs nder the water. all you get there is blowies but this man changed something and went out really early and found some small rock crabs. I seriousely mean the shell is about 3cm squared. Anyway he put them on the line allive at about 10 o'clock and bait stopped at abobut 3 o'clock. every 2 mins or so he pulled in brim threading the crab on from the bottom up. therfor the blowies had a bite at the crab and the crab bit back literally. but the bream didn't care because they are the bigger fish and he got HEAPS of fish but threw them all back. I have had no luck finding any rock crabs.

Sounds like the Mount Hennry Bridge.

I might have to try the crab idea cheers.

I have heard of people using yabbies and cleaning up not sure where to get yabs from though maybe a bait pump on the flats low tide.

Mt Henry Bridge

Wed, 2013-03-06 20:25

Gday, I have a mate who fishes there quite often, not at the bridge, but the banks of the river either side of the bridge and both directions.  Flathead, Bream, Tailor are all common catches but hard body lures and rubber booties/old sneakers are required.  Have a shoulder bag with bait or lures, pliers, rag, knife ,measuring device etc and wade the shallows. Baits are an option, but blowies just own them, same for soft plastics.  Persistance can be the key though, I lost a 35cm+ bream right in the shallows at my feet on the aquanis side towards salter pt after landing about 70 blowies all on river prawns just on a fact finding mission.

Proved they were there, went to lures, still hook up blowies, but far less and over summer flatties were going off.

Polarised glasses help heaps to be able to see through the glare also.  Cheap ones can be found at servos for under 30$.

I grew up in Willetton, plenty of fishing to be done in the swan and canning.

Try to keep things

Wed, 2013-03-06 19:45

Try to keep things simple

Running sinker rig:

swivel tied to about 30cm of line (I use about 10-15lb) with a small ball sinker threaded on then another swivel then tie on a leader about 30cms again down to a small wide gap or circle hook.

The lighter the leader the better but blowies chomp through them pretty quick if too light, I use flurocarbon when possible at about 20lbish some people will say that is over kill but I still get em.

Flurocarbon is a lot more see through under water (they say near invisible) and is more abrasion resistant.

Have fun with it

Brendon

 Yeah I use lighter leaders

Thu, 2013-03-07 22:41

Yeah I use lighter leaders like 4lb for lures but with baits I just get frustrated tying and replacing hooks due to blowfish (Im a bit lazy these days lke that) and I still get good fish.

I think my best bream (years ago) I used 30lb leader went around 38cm from memory up past Riverton bridge on a mates tinny in the snags.

I know its overkill but as I said "the lighter the leader the better", thats just what I use and it still works.

My main line is I think 4kg (maybe less cant remember) on a 3 foot rod lots of fun when a decent fish is on got a 37cm tailor about a month ago (with the 20lb leader and happy for that) man it was fun taking line and jumping like a marlin hahaha.

Again Im just saying what I use and am open for advice if there is a better way

 Even an un weighted prawn

Wed, 2013-03-06 19:51

Even an un weighted prawn works a lot of the time if the wind allows

Dont go casting to the midlle of the river either as bream tend to hang around the shore a lot of the time (most of my best fish have come out of knee deep water)

I dont know how to use the fisho lingo really but I had a 3/0 gang hook and coming off the side with a spoon sinker at the bottom, also a small swivel at the top.

Nice work mate.

A good book that I learnt a lot of knots and rigs was "Geoff Wilsons Knots and rigs" I think I saw an updated version of it in bcf the other day.

Good for simple and complexed stuff and I wish I didnt give my copy away

hi guys tomoz I think about

Fri, 2013-03-08 18:17

hi guys tomoz I think about 2 heading down to the aquinus college side of the swan river or maybe the white old wood bridge next to the raffles hotel. I have been told places where you get snagged in the swan river is usually good for bream. I also have seen on a youtube vid Zman-grubZ is good for bream? also some small jigs. I have created a running sinker jig with two swivels holding in the sinker and 3 with a 1/0 hook and 3 with a 3/0 hook. I am using river orawn and coral prawn and also on the vid saw how to put the prawn on the line. hopefully we have enough for afternoon tea! (this sounds stupid but that is the massive ammount of fish that we usually catch. also been told guildford next to the footy oval is good. been there before with no bites but after about 20 youtube vids I hav worked out not the open bit but where the snaggy fallen down trees would be a great spot.

also are these places good for bream and/or tailor?????????
