flathead

hey guys. been looking at paper and apparently huge flathead being caught at canning bridge. got kayaks so doesnt have to be shore angling but mum wouldnt want to wait in the car and would rather be in tha action aswell! I would probably be able to go out on my own anyway.

but the point of this is to work out how to catch and clean flathead. I need to know how to fillet or get the actual meat (you know what I mean) and the rigs and if lures how do i work them?

Few vids on filleting and skinning on youtube, have fun with the rib bones. i wouldnt eat anything that far up river but flat head are the best. Id just troll small bibbed lures around the banks, never tried in a yak, but cover ground and find the fish, works for me in the tub

Love Flathead

Flathead are a superb eating fish, nice white firm flesh and pretty easy to fillet.

I scale them and leave the skin on but each to their own.

Flathead are very receptive to lures, I have caught them on soft plastics and spoon style

lures, with soft plastics a slow retrieve with a pause to allow the lure to sink then a small twitch works

well. Spoons can just be retrieved slowly.

If fishing with a lure move around and continue to cast over new ground, look for areas that

have slight drop offs.

Good luck and hope you have some luck.

thanks mate! was watching youtube vid and people fishing for flathead at canning bridge. I am going about 12 till 5 this arvo. saw a few good lured and the old fly line worked good. also at canning bridge bream hang around apparently so throwing a few running sinker lures with a mix of river prawn and coral prawn as bait. any blowies there? I will give it a go anyway because everyone knows 50 blowies then a bream! (well for me at least)

Flatties have gone pretty

Sat, 2013-03-09 14:20

Flatties have gone pretty quiet in the river the last few weeks, which is unusual for this time of year. Personally I won't fish canning bridge because there's usually too many people there & the place is lousy with blowies. Forget 50 blowies per bream, try a 150-1. They usually slow down a little after dark though so that should at least make them tolerable & there are some properly big bream around the pylons. If you want to throw lures then your better off wading the shallows to the south of the bridge (back into the canning) as there are a few less blowies & the territory is more flathead friendly. Flathead are not all that fussy so pretty much any hardbody lure around the 50mm mark will take thier interest. Don't be afraid to try larger or smaller lures though & be prepared to vary your retrieve until you hit on what they want on the day. Forget soft plastics, they are a complete waste of time during the dry months in the lower sections of the river, the blowies will maul them within seconds, even if you retrieve them really fast.

He used some bait that another guy had caught earlier trumpeter. only legal fish of the night.
