Three Mile Reef
Submitted by tim-o on Thu, 2012-08-23 20:55
Just wondering what everyone refers to when they quote this, I was under the impression the three mile reef runs along a fair bit of the NOR coast about 3 mile offshore (consisting of several reef systems) where it rises from the 20s and where the breakers are visible from shore when the swell is up, but have seen a patch of reef named that, pretty much straight out from Ocean Reef on a chart. Is it that specific reef structure everyone fishes and trolls the back of, or is it 'the stretch of reef' I refered to?

Most would refer to the line
of reef running north- south where the water depth drops from say 10-12m down to 20 plus and is dotted by places like staggies, centaur reef and the like mainly considered between say two rocks and hillaries....hope that helps.
furthermore description of "inside" or "on the back" of the three mile gives you more info.

I've been fishing the 3 Mile
I've been fishing the 3 Mile as of late and have 2 outa three good sessions with some sambos on jigs, size dhu, nice black arse and a horse KGW amoungst the normal shite fish.
I am using 6/0 hooks as I want to avoid the wrasse but have been getting some decent bites and having trouble getting hookup and and thinking of taking it down to a 4/0 as I'd imagine there won't be many monsters swimming around the 3 Mile. Would that be big enough to avoid the wrasse still but hookup more of the blackies and KGW or is it better to miss those bites of fish that aren't big enough to take a 6/0? Maybe even mix it up and run with a 6/0 and a 4/0?

You'll still manage to catch
You'll still manage to catch wrasse no matter what size hooks you use.
I fish unweighted baits on 2 snelled 5/0 or 6/0 circles when on the 3 mile usually.
That is when I have a boat again

Yeah tried that the other day
Yeah tried that the other day whilst sending out a mulie trail to bring the sambos in but didn't have luck on either and went back to paternoster rig and back on the bites.
I've still got you down as a potential deckie mate but still getting a lot of interest from dad and brother and a few mates

Haha if it's sambos you're
Haha if it's sambos you're after then I always have at least one rod out the back with a live wrasse under a balloon. Very rarely fails to get a hookup.
As for burl eying, we've found that catching wrasse on a small rod and cubing them fresh gets good results.
For skippy and the likes a mix of pollard water and fish oil usually does the trick. Also take any frames you have from previous trips and hang them over the side

Balloon idea is great. I
Balloon idea is great. I dropped down a live wrasse last time and a monster appeared but I got too excited and tried to strike with the circle hooks and lost him.
I made up some berley one Tuesday with mulies that I left in the boat overnight mashed with my paint stirrer and added pollard, fish oil, oil from cooking fish the night before and a bit of water. Called it the 'Fog of War' mix

Haha just chuck the rod in
Haha just chuck the rod in the holder and only pick it up when it screams off.
Sounds like a deadly mix, should definitely bring some fish around the boat
