Tiagra 30WLSRA versus ???
Submitted by bsir on Wed, 2011-04-27 12:16
I'm looking at updagrading with a new reel.
I currently have a TLD15, 25 and Tiagra 16. All spooled with Braid (10kg and 2 x 15kg).
I want to setup a decent trolling outfut and was thinking about a tiagra 30WLSRA, rigged with 24kg.
This is pretty expensive, so will probaby team it wup with 24kg backbone t-curve (cheaper than the Shimano tiagra rod).
Plan is to use this for trolling the FADs and exmouth.
Any tips for whether to use braid, mono or braid with a mono topshot?
Is it worth spending the extra $$ on a Tiagra, or should I save a bit of coin and just go for a TLD30 or similar?

Go the Tiagra you won’t be
Go the Tiagra you won’t be disappointed….. They are a top reel. Maybe consider going to the 50WLRS just extra line capacity… especially if you have marlin in mind. If it is going to be solely a trolling outfit I would recommend using mono. I personally like the Stren Gold but others also use the Berkely big game.
Just my 2cents hope it helps

Also consider
a Penn International V, on equal par with the Tiagra - some consider it better but its preference IMO, both are excellent reels. Beyond those two, check out the alutecnos or accurate game reels as well - beautifully engineered but pricey.
Is it it worth spending the extra? Only you can answer that really and will depend on what you expect of the outfit and how often you will use it......
And as the wanderer said, if it is a trolling outfit go with a good quality mono like the stren gold or berkley big game rather than braid - and equally as stated above, consider a 50 size reel if you are deadset on 24kg, or just stick with the 30 size and spool it with 15kg line. For my money, I reckon a 15kg outfit will be more than adequate for the FADS and exmouth.

I agree with the above
I agree with the above mentioned.
Looking at what you are going to use it for I would go for the 30WLRSA as it is not only easier to handle, but it can handle 15 or 24kg very well.
Id only go mono and go with Stren - saw it last for 4.5 hrs on a mates large marlin in the AIBT with no centre in the top guide (not a roller tip) only to have the wind on eventually fail (yes Brucesta, one I made...) and the stren was continually freying on the metal, but not failing. Also, have a look at the penn inter 30W as they are DEFINATELY as good as a tiagra - might come down to price (I think the Inters are a little cheaper)
Anyway, cant have too many gold delights in the launchers!

yep, seen the inters
yep, seen the inters advertised cheaply at the moment. Agree with everyones comments above too. Choose a budget & decide how often the reel will be used... if it's only seldomly, you could also look at the tyrnos range which still saves you money.

Got the Tiagra
Thanks Guys.
I checked out the Penn 30 VSW. It was about $150 cheaper than the Tiagra 30W LRSA, but I preferred the feel of the Tiagra so stuck with that.
Put 24kg Stren on it, thans for the tip.
Now comes the hard part.......
