Tips fishing Green head
Submitted by mallesh on Mon, 2015-09-21 15:54
G'day Friends,
Heading to Green head on Friday arvo with couple of mates.
Frist time fishing in the area, a general advise on where and what depths to look for will be much appreciated.
My boat is a coralline 5.8 ocean runner. Type of fishing will be bottom bouncing, mainly bait fishing.
Other mates with bigger boats venture out to 60's and 80 meter even further, but I am not confident being new to the area.
So asking for some local knowledge and tips please.
Note: I do get seasick on big rolling seas that's other reason not going too far.
Thanks in advance.
Mallesh

Lots of fish nice and close, north and south of town. Heaps of skippy around and use live wrasse for the dhus. Shouldnt have to fish deeper than 20m..

Just make sure you use the
Just make sure you use the markers heading out and in from the main jetty. There is a bit of reef around in close and if there is swell you should be able see pretty much where you need to go. Just out from the jetty there is a shallow reef which I always hit. Yes it is marked but I am just a bit blasé and forgetful. Once out behind the reefs any where from 20-100 metres there is fish where there is a bit of structure.

We've shot Dhu there in less
We've shot Dhu there in less than 10m, plenty good baldies, dhu and other tasties inshore.

Thanks guys for your tips.
I really appreciate this.
Do you guys recommend drifting to cover ground or anchor and burley as what we do here for snapper?
Also Beau I know you are a jigging/ soft plastic person, which one worked better?
Need to get into this artificial stuff sooner than later.
Thanks again guys.

I reccomend drifting. I
I reccomend drifting.
I fished both the wrasse and plastics/jigs at the same time, just leave the wrasse in the rod holder, both techniques worked well.

We Caught a couple of Dhuies there same long weekend last year
Hi Mallesh
I will be up there at the Caravan park this weekend.
I have not done a lot of fishing out of there either. However we were up there this same time last year and fished just south of the town in the bay in 8m of water and picked up two Dhuies anchored.
One on a floating mulie and the other on a paternoster rig with some occy.
My boat is a Cruise Craft Explorer. Come and say Hi.

Hi Mate,
Thanks for your reply. I am staying at Centre break beach stay which I believe is not too far from the caravan park.
Couple of my other mates with bigger boats are staying at the caravan park.
Will definitely come and say hello.
Mate, did you check the weather report? looking very average at the moment. Hopefully it comes good for the weekend.
Cheers

Yes a bit average
Bit average but should be good on Monday.
Its a long weekend.
I fished up there last time it was a bit average to but just played around in the south bay, it was a bit uncomfortable but OK. I didn't venture to far out.
See you there drive safe.

Wednesday arvo
Spent 4 hours out in front of the town on Wednesday arvo for 4 dhueys, biggest about 14kg and one that went 59cm kept and two released both around 10kg. Also got a just size baldy, a reasonable skippy and a good black arse.
Went out around 1100 today for another dhuey going in at 63cm, pretty ordinary with the breeze picking up for a while before dropping off as we put the boat in the backyard at 1400

Thanks for the report Carnarvonite
Looks like you had a great day in the water on Wednesday.
Unfortunately we are not going to Green Head today due to average weather conditions.
Both my mates are new to boat fishing and are not comfortable fishing in big swells, all my marks are in 40 and 50 meters which is a good 15 nautical miles.
Instead we are planning to fish Perth in 30's on Sunday arvo and may be a deep drop on Monday with other mate who's got bigger boat.

Didn't need to go deep, all fish were caught inside 14 metres

Hi Carnarvonite
Thanks again for your advise.
Did not end up going but planning for a trip before the ban.
Mate, did you fish on a set spot/mark or just drift on a good ground and pick up fish randomly?
Your input will be much appreciated.
Thanks

Drift
Was on a mates boat who has just shifted down there from up here, he has bugger all spots so far and it was more of a ground finding expedition that worked out ok, used to do the same off Two Rocks in a 4 metre tinny with great results.
Just drifted and kept a very close eye on the sounder, anything that looked like holding fish I pinged and when there was enough went back and did short sharp drifts on each one.
If the mark looked crappy on inspection they got deleted. Saves travelling miles burning heaps of fuel for the same result. Getting bashed about in a boat has lost its appeal for me many years ago
