TODAY'S Coho

High wind... and driving rain... can't stop a West Aussie. Well, I lasted _an hour_ in moderate surf up to my chest, before heading upriver a few hundred metres, to my favourite pool. The river's deeper than it was a week ago... and the occasional splash encouraged me. I had this nice male Coho on in fifteen minutes.  Unlike the last salmon, which took three-quarters of an hour to land, this eight-pounder was on the bank in ten minutes. Would have been less, but my landing net is just too small.

Would have stayed on for a second Coho, but quite heavy rain started... and there's always tomorrow!

We had fresh coho shashimi on the Kenai also in the pouring rain, caught filleted and ate some much to the guides utter horror that we would eat it raw but it was absolutely the best I have ever tasted !

I'm an adventurous soul, but raw salmon might be less than bearable.  (Have seen a few, BTW, but they're busy enough with the Pinks upstream!) Yesterday we smoked two salmon for 23 hours, after a five hour rock salt / brown sugar marinade, with cajun spices.   BBQing salmon steaks tonight.  The missus has knocked out nine salmon patties in the last hour or so.

Newsflash: I was just advised we _will_ be trying thin slivers of raw salmon tomorrow, when I land the next Coho. She's already placed her order!~ She must be running short on recipes... .
