Todays effort and IDs

Headed out with Duges around 5am behind GI and rottnest trying a few spots .. plenty of dhu and snapper not one in the esky though , one dhu went 49.5cm that hurts . Bit of a mixed bag including small sambos , leather jacket , skippy , bbums , we were cursed with small sharks on a few spots . Moved on and then we were pulling up what I think were sea sweep they were like blowies everywhere all released , but thought we should've kept one for a taste test but weren't 100% on ID . 3 other types of fish not sure on ID .. all in all , a good day catching fish and got a feed .. would've been nice if we had a snapper or dhu in the fridge but thats fishing . Seen heaps of birds and bait fish in the sound on the way back to woodies .. with quite a few boats heading out around 5pm snapper hunting I presume , the water was like glass at that stage.

The shark I was gonna call for a spinner. Bluer skin, pointier nose, black tips on the fins?

Wed, 2013-05-15 06:20

Never tried them - but apparently the sea sweep rate 3 stars, not to bad eating apparently.

they do also fight well though, i keep hoping for a small snapper when i have hooked on to one, get heaps just past rotto.

I reckon just about anyfish

Wed, 2013-05-15 13:11

I reckon just about anyfish tastes better fresh than any frozen fillet.  I will take fresh tailor fillets over frozen snappers fillets for example.

scorpion fish is delish

Wed, 2013-05-15 23:00

Delicious actually, firm white fillets, but its a bugger to handle + clean. best to take the head clean off

If you want to butcher it. Also, the shark doesn't look like the bronzies I've caught, I'm calling it for a

Long nosed grey. that would be 2/4 for carnarvonite I think.

Cheers for the responses ..

Cheers for the responses .. definately give the sweep and red throat run in the pan next time we come across them . Don't think I could bring myself to knock the moonlighter on the head , same as leatherjackets I have a soft spot for them as well lol , plus not much meat anyway .. the scorpion fish , well their just friggin too ugly to eat . Small sharks seem to plague us at times so I'll have too brush up on their actual IDs .

Spinner shark (took flight on the way in) plus before filleting got a good look at it. Sea Sweep (reports are they are not too bad on the tooth so we should have kept one to make up our own mind - fish cakes at worst) Red Throat Emperor. Moonlighter. Western Red Scorpion not Gunard as we first called it (again reports are very good re eating - though for the risk/effort it would need to be bigger than this specimen)
