Torsa 16 vs Ocea Jigger 4000P/5000P vs other options

Well seeing as I haven't treated myself to a new pressy for a while I thought I'd get myself a new heavy jigging and bottom bouncing reel (PE8). The catch is it also needs to be used as a trolling reel every now and then (mackies, YFT, wahoo etc). The jigging/bottom bouncing will mainly be sambos/kings down south and up for doggies and other big jig targets up north.
I like the lever drag on the Torsa 16 for the trolling side of things, but have only jigged with one a few years ago on Shikari and can't remember what it was like (ie too fast or too heavy).
Who here has jigged with both the Torsa and the Ocea Jiggers and how did they compare?
Does anyone have any other reel suggestions that would suit?
Cheers
Tim

Stella SW20000 & Blue Rose

Sat, 2009-12-05 05:12

I don't think you can go past the Shimano Stella SW20000 matched with the Shimano Blue Rose Full-Gene S60MD with PE8 loaded up. I have used this rig up North alot and it has never missed a beat. A few $$'s but worth it. Good Luck!

Apparently the new BX series

Apparently the new BX series of Accurates are pretty good as well. They implemented all of the after-market pawls that JM were putting into the previous generation of reels.

If Accurate have implimented

Sat, 2009-12-05 07:25

If Accurate have implimented recommendations from JM why not get one of the new jigging master reels??? I have one of the PE 4 models and could not be happier. And they are a hell of a lot lighter than the oceajiggers and torsa's. Torsa 16's though i have heard to be a very good reel. Good luck with it!

Jigging Master PE8

Sat, 2009-12-05 07:37

I have just started using a Jigging Master PE6 reel which is a great little reel for jigging, very light with plenty of power and they come in a huge range of colours to suit your needs. I have been told that early next year they will be bringing a new PE8 reel into the market, I think it would be worth waiting to check it out before you go and buy if you are in no hurry, check out this link to there website it has all the specs on it http://www.jiggingmaster-ag.com/view_product_d.asp?id=103 it looks like it will be a reel and a half.

Duel 20 Speedy

Sat, 2009-12-05 07:57

Have a look at the Duel 20 Speedy. Holds 300m of PE8 with a gear ratio of 5.5:1.

I have had one for 6 years now. It is great for jigging, bottom bashing and trolling for mackies. The reels require very little maintainence, haven't had to service the reel yet same as the day i brought it.

Caught the sambo in my picture with it no worries.

Think they retail in Australia for around $490.

JM v's Accurate

Sat, 2009-12-05 07:59

Not sure the JM reels are any better than Accurates and they do cost more. Accurates BX600 is around $470US and the JM PE6 is $545US.

reel!

Sat, 2009-12-05 11:46

Yo Tim,

Torsa 16 is a small reel so the bigger 20 is a better comparison to the OJs & Accurate!

For trolling, jigging & bottom bouncing I prefer the leverdrag for dragcurve pressure & quick adjustability......i'd look at the Torsa 20!

thanks guys and keep the advice coming.
I'm still leaning towards the Torsa for ease of drag adjustment, but need to get one in my hands when I get back from work to see how it feels.
Anyone jigged with either?
SamC, how's the Ocea going?

Ahh only if they are in close and small.

That is going to have to be my next reel, or my brother's TLD30II with oodles of 50lb.

Gorilla 20 !!

Sat, 2009-12-05 15:41

Having just gone through this decision recently I have looked at a huge range of overheads but seeing as you mentioned trolling that sort of narrows it down to lever drags and with that in mind I'd look at either a Torsa 20 as mentioned by Ryan or the Goriila 20 { a 12 may be a bit small just because of line capacity } ....

You could also look at the 16vsw, getting a bit heavier but a good all round reel for your purpose...

And as you know the better brand jigging braids are rated at higher breaking strains for their PE number so you may be able to down size the reel if weight is an issue or stick with the size of reel you want and gain capacity through a thinner diameter....

Cheers fishfish...

Hi.

Another great reel
Are the New Everol 6\12 and the 12\20
The 12 is comparable to the new BX600 Accurates.
And Reckoned to be more bulletproof.
Same as the small Tib's.
The 6 is a lovely little reel.

I've used Everol for near 40 yrs.
Coating used to be a bit iffy.
But. They always had the best drags on the market.
and Later ones had no more problems with the gearing.
