Torsa 30 or 40

Undecided on which would be the best size to get the 30 or 40.

Mainly used for b.bouncing.

Looking for comments from people who are using them.

Cheers Stoinka

Fri, 2008-09-12 18:59

I use the 20 & 30 for jigging and bottom bashing and find them more than adequate, my personal view would be the 40 is too big unless your going way out deep and need to use a harness as the 40 has the harness lugs.

So after all that I'd say go the T30, you wont regret it Laughing

Fri, 2008-09-12 19:11

That's a good price but they are owned by a QLD company, I'd prefer to pay a tiny bit more and support a store with a WA bank account Wink

Also most shops will price match if your polite about it.

See Honsu at Oceanside Tackle & Marine, he'll look after you.

Now that is one reel I wish I could get. Do they come in dual ratios? Sorry guys, I know you've probably answered this elsewhere.

No mate they only come in

Fri, 2008-09-12 19:40

No mate they only come in single speed, but that being said are a very powerful reel when winding big weights from the bottom.

Boofhead will attest to this after using mine on the weekend, he seemed very impressed at how easy it was to get lines up when I said lets move.

I'm sure he'll post here when he sees it, but the poor bastard is probably at work right now....lol

Dont worry Jess, I'm having a bourbon for you mate Tongue out

yes Col, i found the torsa

Sat, 2008-09-13 00:30

yes Col, i found the torsa 20 to be great like Al said... i have been using a tld 25 and after using that and going to a torsa 20 it was pretty much no comparison... the torsa just winds em in for ya almost...it just seemed to be no effort really.....i have been a bit stand offish about spending so much on a reel but after using one it has made up my mind..... not sure exactly what the difference is between 20, 30 and 40 but pretty sure its only line capacity and weight of the unit so that is up to the individual i suppose if that is the case....

yes Al i was working and no Al i dont need you to have a bourbon for me cause i have plenty on my own thanks...and you couldnt handle another one anyway....... lol....

cheers Jes

Given the oversized (tough) gearing, I could live with 5.8 : 1 Wink

2 more questions?

Fri, 2008-09-12 19:58

What's the drag @ strike setting

If you set that, does it still free spool - or is that dependent on weights?

Depends what you adjust it

Fri, 2008-09-12 20:16

Depends what you adjust it to and what drag cam you have in it, but it can be set at various levels.

To free spool it just push the lever back, doesnt matter what drag settings you have as with the lever back fully it's in free spool.

Getting a bit nervous here replying, I'm sure the vultures are out there ready to pounce and prove me wrong on some minor technicality...lol

I think Dreamweaver is just

Fri, 2008-09-12 20:21

I think Dreamweaver is just alluding to a (common?) problem with lever drag overheads.

If you do the drag up too far, there is no freespool in the free position on the lever. Its why the Avets advertise "14lb with freespool" on their SX reels - you can get more drag, but it affects your freespool.

Fri, 2008-09-12 20:51

On my T30 I have a pretty mean drag setting that when pushed to sunset can really hurt those big sambos, and still drops 300g jigs no probs at all

I just love cuz they tough, work, reliable & not built to a budget with bushes in important areas that might let you down....lol

But I'm sure a certain individual has seen many of them back for warranty, just like all those Stellas he had come back from a store that only ever sold about two, that never made a warranty claim on one.

Research is great...lol

T30

Fri, 2008-09-12 20:57

i used to have one of them but i sold it cos i use the stella which i share from jigging and gt rod .

so what can i say about T30 it,s very good but when you put them in very heavy drag it can make a bit of noise while chasing doggie,s

but for reef it,s no problem petty

Yup, Till's on the money

Sat, 2008-09-13 06:52

Yup Till, that's exactly what I was referring to. It would seam that many lever drags give you a strike position drag setting that, when set, will impact on the reel's ability to free spool.

I know you can overcome this by setting the drag at a point past the free spool position, but personally, if the manufacturer is recommending and promoting a drag value at the strike position, and the reel with a free spool ability, then it shouldn't be affecting that free spool. Just my thoughts.

Even the TS20 is a big reel, its smidge larger capacity than the Saltist 30, and under the 40.

Sat, 2008-09-13 16:13

I know a couple of guys who have traded Tiagra 30s & 50s for the Torsa 40.....the harness lugs make it quite a versatile game fishing weapon....for bottom fishing, the Torsa is a premium option, and unless you are going seriously deep the 16N, 16, 20 & 30 are enough reel....alot of other reels will do the job for lees coin. The Tyrnos 12 is worth looking at....15kg of drag out of the box with a 2sp option if you need the POWER.....just what you need for those stubborn bootom fish.....mind you, I've got a Torsa16N for jigging which is very nice.
