torsa or JM

After some opinions from some of the better educated in these things.

Looking for a new heavier jigging/bottom fishing outfit for up north after my recent smokings on PE3. Was leaning towards one of the new JM pe5N reels, but was also thinking that the torsa 16N could be a good option. Not really sure on the rod yet, but I do like the look of some of the new saltigas, or may just go the old faithful tcurve 200. Want to fish at least PE4 but probably PE5 and jigs 150-300gm but also a fair bit of bottom bashing.

Opinions or other options?

Not sure if the new JM reels

Thu, 2011-06-23 09:26

Not sure if the new JM reels are different apart from being narrow, but I know at least one person who isnt that much of a fan of a smaller version due to their slow retreive ratio. Not sure how they are on corrosion either? I've played with a PE4 or PE5 once but wasnt all that impressed (plus constant on clickers annoy me). The torsas on the otherhand are bulletproof and good reels, but damn they're heavy! 811g for the 16N. Not fun to jig with all day with (unless you're running PE6+ or something).

Considered a talica? Saltiga narrow?

I have a Duel Speedy 20 reel

Thu, 2011-06-23 09:31

I have a Duel Speedy 20 reel and JM Power Spell 300 rod that I use for heavy jigging/bottom fishing.

Love the rod, I have had it for ages and it has stopped many a big fish. Leaves the Tcurves for dead. Power spells are beening discounted at the moment due to the release of a new model.

As for the reel is it soon to be upgraded. The Duels are great but a bit old school. Looking at a Ocea Jigger 4000P. These reels have got great reviews from alot of the jigging forums. 15kgs of drag and a slightly higher gear ratio to the JM reels. Helps when fishing 100m+.

There isn't a new series of the JM reels, just a new model: JM PE5N, capacity: 400m of PE5, down from 470m in the PE5 model. I found the gearing a bit slow.

That corresponds most closeley with the Ocea Jigger 3000 and its 5g different in weight. I know there are some new 2011 models for the 1000, 1500 and 2000 sizes, haven't seen anything yet for the 3000.

Hey mate, im in the same situation as u and are looking for somethen to stop getting buried into the reef so much. Aswell as the 2 reels u've mentioned i was also considering a smaller size accurate bx, either the bx 400N or the bx500N. Havnt played with one before but i think its in a similar class to the jm, anyone used one of these and have some feedback on them?

I own two Accurate reels, a BX600 and the BX600N. They're both great reels, they use an ARB for anti-reverse.

JM got their start making mods for the Accurate reels, they added double dog systems which make the characteristic noise like the clicker is on all the time. They also make a longer handle for the Accurate reels.

Accurate recently decided that the JM reels were just a little bit too close to comfort, and had a go at them over patent infringement. The result was that JM are no longer selling their double disk drag reels in the USA market, where the patent is enforceable.

Yeah i remember something about the patent infringment on here a while ago.
So then would the 400 or 500 be better for pe5? Looking to fish with around 9 or 10kg's of drag with it, hopefuly!

The Torsa is probably the

Thu, 2011-06-23 12:02

The Torsa is probably the strongest reel of the lot in terms of the gears and the drag but yes it is heavy.

I've gone through a similar process recently but kind of in reverse.

I've currently got a Saltiga 30T and since it's only on a PE 3 rod it's just not suited so have checked out the Talica 8 and Saltiga 20/30 (as opposed to the 'T'). The Saltiga 30 star drag is by far the better balanced reel compared to both the Shimano and Daiwa lever drag versions be it in one or two speed. It's a suttle but noticeable difference with the single speeds but the star drag is definitely the choice for me over the lot. You'll find the even bigger gears of the Torsa will make it tend to roll over even more.

The 30T is more of a PE 5 and up reel and is beautiful but not for the rod I have. Maybe it's worth looking at for what you want. I'm only selling mine due to it's unsuitability for the rod as it's a brilliant reel.

I haven't posted it in the for sale section as yet.

Simon I've got the Torsa 20

Thu, 2011-06-23 12:36

Simon I've got the Torsa 20 as my go to fish stopper. It's loaded with 50lb but only becuase it is me deep reel too (600m of line) but previously had PE8 on it. I still got the occasional stitch up on this though and rate it as a good reel for heavy jigging or bottom bouncing.

I've used the JM reels before up to PE6 and liked them but they are slow. I didn't mind this retrieve for jigging but didn't bottom bounce with it to compare. I don't think you could go wrong with either reel.

JM reel

Thu, 2011-06-23 15:07

i own 2 jm reels pe4 and pe8, i and alot of other dedicated jiggers find that the retrieve ratio is perfect for jigging when put together with there rods...

For a bottom basher it would be great aswel apart from winding a sinker up from 100m+ lol

pe4 has 50lb max drag more than enuf imo

JM reel

Thu, 2011-06-23 16:11

I love my JM reel and yes I know I am still reeling up line when clint has his up and the boat started, but the ratio makes it a lot easier to stop those really big ones...
