Trailer rebuilds etc-pics added
Its been the elephant in the room so to speak as regards my trailer, in that with the ADR's requiring a 120% capacity with non load sharing suspension, i couldnt get my trailer over the line for more than 2000kg rating.
The frame is in really good nick, so Ive been gathering up the bits to address this for a while, scored used Kodiak SS disc/calipers and Dexter unit.
I attacked the frames a couple of weeks back and sent them off for galvanising.
Setting up the brake flanges in the correct position and welding them on
Having got them back its all assembled into a rolling subframe.
Off to Melbourne tonite for a couple of days and when i get back I'll drop the boat in the water, remove the old suspension and slide this under, u bolts, drop on the Dexter EOH unit and relicence it at 3000kg.
note-if you intend to give me a lecture, then dont bother commenting. If you want more detail then feel free to ask! Constructive comments more than welcome though

I know with the couplings
I know with the couplings (from memory) if they have a "D rating" on them then they comply with Aus-did you check whether yours were rated Til? Dont rely on the bloke who may not know even though he should...
Copper lines-were supplied by Martins and I didnt notice. But I did ask Hose Express about whether the copper was suitable for a 1600psi system and he said yes but usually its bundy tubing used.

Yep good job there Rob. Glad to see you galvanised all and didn't do a half job and paint. It's the only way to go. Looks like someone knows how to weld ;)

Nice one Rob. Especially like
Nice one Rob. Especially like the old skool mags, do you have a matching set for the Torana tow car......haha, great work mate.
I gotta pull my callipers off and check how rusty they are after a few months......is it worth putting heaps of rubber grease behind the rubber seal on the piston to stop it rusting???? I guess S/S is best but will wait fir these to crap themselves first.

Yeah I am probably being harsh. Some of the parts are still good and could change out the other parts but to be honest for the mucking around and the cost of those parts, it is easier for me to do the whole thing for not much extra coin.

also mate, watch them screw on dust caps, we had many come off when I was in the game.
we used to chisel punch the end to stop them coming undone, maybe some lock tight might work

Thanks Ron, yeah ive already
Thanks Ron, yeah ive already seen why. The washer between the bearing and nut only just fits inside the cap and actually touched it on a couple. Cos one spins and one doesnt, it can loosen it.
Calipers-shouldnt need SS ones but they were a package.

update to trailer
final instalment
After getting back from Melbourne, I had 4 days between dropping off the boat til flying out Thursday to complete it.
I was lucky enough to bump into one of those characters who has the ability to help a stranger despite personal adversity-Peters boat had unfortunately sunk in his pen the day before.
A chance meeting at the harbor saw him offer me his pen to park the boat without hesitation-a legend and a gentleman.
So-boat off and into the water, trailer home and just 3 hours saw old undercarriage off and new rolled under and bolted up-perfect fit!
That was the easy part-draw bar needed to modified, Dexter unit and breakaway fitted, lights rewired and new larger plug fitted then over the pits. Needed mudflaps and in the rush Id forgotten to weld the axle locators plus the Toyota had the brakelight wire wrong in the plug-factory fitted??
I also took to opportunity to modify the winch post in light of another members recent incident-Ive never liked the flat bar brace on the front of most winch posts, great in tension, hopeless in compression. This will be galvanized together with drawbar later.
looks like the tires are soft in this pic for some reason? Towed beautifully, onto the weighbridge again for 2650kg on the axles and 150-200 on the towball
Time was running out (6pm flight) and I got it passed at 3pm, down to ramp, bring boat round only to get a call that it was subject to a audit and I needed to detail the brakes used etc. Home, park it up with a flush, pack bags in 30 minutes and straight to the airport with 5 minutes to spare
Only thing left is to get the drawbar and post galvanized.

Looks good Rob , I always add more steel to that part off the winch post too. Have seen many of them fail under load or as a result of corrosion.

thanks John-if I was you Id
thanks John-if I was you Id coat them with something like fish oil or maybe CRC urethane seal coat or that stuff for coating machined parts, but its probably the discs that go first.
But I found with the old trailcraft trailer and cast iron brakes, that a good freshwater hose straight after retrieve and 2 years, still no problem with the rotors

Thanks Lyndon
stuck at sea now for another 25 days yet
But home about 19th July and the kids have another week of holidays so weather dependant its either out to the islands, up to Shark Bay and over to the west side for as long as we can or maybe up to Coral Bay.
If the weather doesnt play the game then could do a camping trip up to Murchison House Station or False Entrance with the kids
My lads are getting withdrawals as they havent been for a long trip since Easter
Too much time to plan this stuff while Im away!
