Transducers

Hello all,
Looking at upgrading the existing Lowrance to a Furuno 588 and don't know enough about them to make an informed decision.
Spend most of my time in 20 - 60m with annual trips to Exmouth where we fish up to 200m
With regards to transducers, is it worth adding the 1kw to the purchase or will the 6oow be sufficient for most of what depths I fish, not against fitting both and switching between the 2 as required either, but no sense buying something that wont be used to its full potential.
Thanks in advance

You will get 350mtrs out of a 600 watt transducer no need going 1kw unless your deep dropping looking for fish in 300mtrs plus.

Sensitivity
When looking at transducers, sensitivity is a factor. If you have the financial means a 1kw transducer is massively more sensitive than a 600w transducer. It's one thing to see the bottom in 300m but it is anothing to see fish targets close to the bottom in 300m. No need to fit both as you can reduce the gain to limit the power output if fishing in the shallows.

After having a few of each I believe the more important question is style and installation. In hull transducer is so much better than transom mount.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

And thru-hull with a fairing
And thru-hull with a fairing the best of all, especially with picking up structure at speed

or if you have an Ali boat
or if you have an Ali boat weld a heavy piece of angle Ali to the transom and bolt a thru hull transducer into it. Saves putting a hole in your boat or hitting it on a trailer roller etc.

beam angle
at depth the 600w transducers have too much beam angle. A 1kw is a lot more narrower so target definition is heaps better to see what is actually directly under the boat, just get a 1kw

Beam angle
thats not necessarily true ace, depends on what model Tranny you get ! But the benefits of a wide beam angle in waters up to say about 120mtrs far outweigh a narrow beam.
My spots are so secret even the fish don't know about them !

Very good info here
Check this thread on thehulltruth. It explains very well what to consider if buying a transducer.
