Yes but not much im not sure

Mon, 2014-05-19 17:37

Yes but not much im not sure there is 200mm there, but then that would alter the downward force on the tow ball.

ive also just been reading about over time it can put a hook in the hull.

I might pack in looking for a used boat its all getting a bit to much hassle.

winch post

Mon, 2014-05-19 17:57

You would have to modify that winch post to get your 200 mm .that post does look weak designwise anyway cheers craig

I bought a new trailer in

Mon, 2014-05-19 18:07

I bought a new trailer in Perth last august and towed it back to Dampier without the boat. The bloke at the trailer shop told me to have the transom about 4 inches past the last roller on the trailer.

looking at the first photo

Mon, 2014-05-19 18:30

it does look like it's sitting to far to the rear, not that I'm an expert by any means. Might pay too check the Vehicle standard regulations. My concern, looking at that would be the boat being more likely to move/shifton the trailer.

Swap

Mon, 2014-05-19 18:38

Swap positions of the jockey wheel and winch post, should give you more than enough length to pull the boat forward and to counteract the added weight on the tow bar move the axle assembly forward about the same measurement

I purchased a hull that was on the wrong trailer. The back end had 20mm of sag in it from 500mm in.

From the photos attached I reckon the trailer looks to small for the boat. Carnarvonite idea sounds the best to me if it is the right trailer.

Plus the winch needs to be

Mon, 2014-05-19 19:02

Plus the winch needs to be lower on the post. Seems like the trailer hasn't been set up too well at all.

Too much overhang

Mon, 2014-05-19 19:19

Me thinks trailer is too small. Need to move the boat forward! The end roller needs to be under the transom for support! Shuffling the winch bar forward aswell as moving the winch down (needs to go down anyhow) will enable this, dont think I have seen a jockey wheel behind the winch bar tho. Will likely need to adjust the rollers heights too.  And as carn says, need to move axle to achieve correct drawbar weight. Id be checking the trailer compliance plate and make sure the boat (weight) complys first then consult a trailer specialist to set it up if it is suitable

 Thank for all your input,

Mon, 2014-05-19 19:20

Thank for all your input, think ill give this one a miss as the bloke was adamant anyone who said it was hung over too much didnt know jack about boats, also recons the trailer cost him 16k last year which says a lot.

i know hes towed it to exmouth on this trailer which could have given the hull a hook.

If his trailer cost him $16k

Mon, 2014-05-19 19:29

If his trailer cost him $16k I am dreading what mine is going to cost for my 8mtr boat. Actually if if he paid $16k for it ask if there is anything else he needs to buy in the near future. We could be onto a quick buck here!

Wow

Mon, 2014-05-19 23:08

Wow, i'm suprised they claim its suited up to 5.5m alloy or glass. I must be old fashioned and would want something bigger and stronger so i don't have any future problems.

Looks

Mon, 2014-05-19 23:44

Looks like it, I suppose they like to get away with the bare minimum at the point of sale. It still looks too small for my standards and i wouldnt be happy towing it for long distance trips.

And i agree the set up has been poorly done .

$16k?

Mon, 2014-05-19 22:45

My dual axel trailer cost $5k new and it has a 5.5m glass boat that lives on it. Tell him he is a knob.

Too small

Mon, 2014-05-19 23:03

That trailer looks way too small for that boat. I would say the old owner skimped out on the 16k one, and bought that one instead.

As others have said, the winch is up too high and the whole set up just looks wrong. Wouldn't suprise me if it is not even rated for the weight of your boat.

IMO, if you moved it forward, you would put too much weight on that main I beam and risk bending it.

I would be looking at a trade in on a tandem trailer that suits the rig better.

Not Legal

Tue, 2014-05-20 09:13

I got pulled over last year by the fuzz and was informed that the last part of the boat (ie motor) was not to be more than 150cm from the most furtherest part back of the trailer. mine sat 153cm trimed up. So i promptly trimmed it down a smidge and told him to have a nice day and go find a real criminal.

Good point though there is no way this would pass period. even if you moved it forward on the trailer. Move on and find a new boat. if he is telling you lies about the trailer cost he is probably bullshitting about everything else.

There should be a model

Tue, 2014-05-20 12:00

There should be a model number on the lower right hand side of the Dunbier manufacturer's plate, which denotes the boat size which the trailer is intended for.  That looks like a Dunbier 'Supa Rolla" series trailer, possibly the 4.7m version, as it does appear to be small in the pictures.  Anyhow, compare the trailer's model number to one of these:  http://www.dunbier.com/trailers/trailers-for-fiberglass-boats/supa-rolla-series/ to be sure.  A quick Google puts the price of the SR5.0M-13B, which should be the right size for a 5m boat, at $3998 to $4775.

As above

Tue, 2014-05-20 14:03

Something about that winch setup is just all wrong. Cant see everthing but it would certainly move the boat forward by lowering the position, but also (and tell me Im a dill if wrong) I wonder if the whole setup has been placed upside down. Maybe the bloke changed it because he is certain handed etc. It just looks very odd.

To me the winch is too high

Tue, 2014-05-20 14:11

To me the winch is too high on the post. It is actually trying to lift the boat up off the trailer. It seems that what he needs to do is drop the winch on the post to a point where the winch strap is coming onto the winch level with the hook on the hull. That would result in the yoke coming away from the hull which would then give some room to move the boat forward on the trailer. This would also place the weight of the boat lower on the post and therefore reduce the fulcrum point of leverage.
