Transom repair
Submitted by mbusby on Tue, 2013-10-15 09:14
So the project has started , I have finally bitten the bullet and decided to replace my transom prior to re powering , after much deliberation iv chosen to do what I can to save myself some money , The boat cost me two bottles of scotch and a bottle of gin , I spent $1200 last year on the trailer to get it licenced and in good working order, was quoted $4500 to replace transom , so far to get this done its cost me $1000 to remove transom and re fibreglass it, with an expected $200-$400 to gelcoat and paint (heres hoping ) so far its cost a lot more than what I purchased for but at the bargain price I got cant really complain.
Thought I would share a few pics and my experience here

Ha. Two bottles of scotch
Ha. Two bottles of scotch and a bottle of gin, don't know I would have even parted with that for a boat with that name on it....
Glass where its cut either side of the transom looks in reasonable nick, not really that hard to replace a transom if your the handy type - just time (at least in the end you know how solid it is). How far have you got? i'd pull all the wood off and replace the whole lot - assuming that's what your doing.
Also hard to tell from the pick bit looks like a full length engine well - any thoughts of redesigning this to a smaller well and having storage (batteries or tackle) or live bait tanks etc in the corners - not that much extra to do whilst doing the transom.
Good luck

Small piece on port side
Small piece on port side appears to be chipboard so well pleased im replacing it all, unfortunately budget doesn't allow for any other mods to rear unfortunate but have to live with it .
Yes the name is the LEMON and after what I've heard and being superstitious wont change it ( may add shark at the end of it though ) technically that's not remaining it is it....
May look at removing and putting in live well/ fuel in corners after the fact as im also putting in pockets down the side when I reglass the back .
