trim tabs and motor fins???

Looking at fitting some trim tabs onto the boat , never had them before only had the hydrofoil type fin on the engine, which worked well, and the honda on the new boat doesnt have one, what i was wondering is whether it will still be beneficial to run a fin on the engine after i put the trim tabs on.

Will it make a difference or will it be worse off running both?

Shouldn't be necessary

Only adds drag, a correctly weighted and trimmed boat shouldn't need either

TRIM TABS

Mon, 2009-07-20 10:51

Matt , the trim tabs are great espically when side on to the wind you can tilt one down etc to ,make your boat ride straight up instead of leaning into the wind, using both tabs will lift the rear end of the boat and solve both problems,  the bigger hydraulic plate type tabs give a larger planning area on the transom and will cost around $ 800 to $ 1000  , i didnt have the room on my alli to install the plate type so i installed the new Volvo shutter type which work great i have had both types on all of my previous boats and swear by them ,   the hydrofoil on the motor will only give you lift in the transom and easier planning speeds these only cost $ 250 plus

I think foils can be quite dangerous in a following sea on the wrong boat. On that boat of yours, I'd be going trim tabs. Check out Alfred's lencos sometime.

Sunshine: Not sure why you recommend against neither, trim tabs make a big difference in crosswinds, not something you can trim out of.

I run trim tabs on my 6.4 m bar crusher and love them. I would see no need for a hydrofoil if you have tabs.

no hydrofoil and it will also counteract the prop torque like i get mine will go on soon.

Mako, here is a bit of personal experience to go by. I had a 12mth old stacer and upgraded from a 30hp to a 40hp yammy.

iput a hydrofoil on the 40hp and it was only on for 1 hr for a calm day sea trial in cockburn sound. Prior to that the hull had been taking a loy of water in and i had reported it to the dealer (luckily).

i later found a split in the keel (bow). Telwater makes stacer and quinnys and i strongly suggest you read the warranty for both motor and hull.

Basically they tried to blame the hydrofoil for causing the crack because of "extra pressure" on the bow? They have since changed their warranty to suit so the fitting of the hydrofoil can void the warranty.

my exp got trim tabs on the

my exp

got trim tabs on the fury, love em when the boat is uneven, or side on into wind / waves.

I have found using fins and trimming and using trim tabs works against each other, however this might be the length of the legs on my motors thats cuasing the problem.

Personally, with trim tabs, its all you need.

Trims are good!

For more bow lift & adjustment then the hydrafoil can be added!

Many boats dont need it but the Trim tabs are awesome. For stability on mono hulls they're a must and a vessel will always lean into the wind as mentioned so they serve a very good purpose!

I went and put on Bennet Trim tabs, never looked back!

not really fussed about bow

Tue, 2009-07-21 10:08

not really fussed about bow lift, theres plenty of power there to lift it with trim, its more about levelling the boat out and trying to get a better ride, i hate having to shift things all over a boat just to get it to sit perfect, hense the trim tabs, but wasnt sure if having them With a hydrofoil would be beneficial or work against each other.

PJAY certainly put the fins into some perspective thats for sure

Yes they fight each other hense why I passed on the Hydrafoil!

I balance up my boat to suit the wind lean and then Tab the rest!
