Tritons and Rangers
Submitted by SamC on Thu, 2011-08-18 14:30
Hey Guys,
Just want to hear some reviews on people out there that own or drive Tritons and Rangers on a regular basis. Im in the market for something alike and i can't afford a Hilux for the ages and kilometres im looking at. Heres some specs on what im after:
- Dual Cab
- Turbo Diesel
- 2007-2010 models
- Low Km's
- 5sp Manual
- $25-$28k maximum budget
- Preferable fruited out somewhat (Bullbar, rollbar, sidesteps, spotties etc etc)
Be interesting to here about experience and recommendations on what dealerships you've liked to deal with? Will also look at privately owned vechiles aswell, but the dealership warranties seem to be quite irresistable.
Thanks in advance
Cheers,
Sam

G'day mate have you thought
G'day mate have you thought about a Mazda BT50, mate has a duel cab and it runs like a dream, also the old boy has a Nissan Nivara in the Dual Cab this also runs like a demon possessed he has the Turbo Diesel all fruited up (2010 model brought second hand for $36000 ex Demo) with long range tanks (170lt) and on the open road gets around 9lt to the 100km, i know its a bit more than what you posted you want but knock the years off and the price should be round what you are looking at.
Just a couple more options for you to think bout, also i would stay away from the older Rangers we have then as our work vehicles and personal thoughts are there crap compared to the above mentioned. Once again go have a look at Purely Commercials drive a few and see what you like cos in the end its your bus.
Just get me back on the water

Ranger/BT 50 same car. Sam
Ranger/BT 50 same car. Sam have you checked out a colarado? They are 36 490 drive away for an 2011 model. Just food for thought. I own a triton 2wd in the 2.5l diesel and its great if I had the money I would have gone the 4by.

tritons/ranger/colorado/navara
hi Sam, i run a fleet of utes in our crane hire and transport business(9 utes) and out of all the brands above i rate the ranger as the best value , we purchased an 09 ranger 3.0 diesel twincab auto with 40,000k's on it for 25,000 from the manheim fowles auctions at the international airport (every tuesday gov auctions if i remember correctly) anyway it was immaculate and has been a top performer for us and i highly recommend one .

Yeh thanks for the input
Yeh thanks for the input fellas.
The Ranger seems to get the thumbs up from most people i talk to.
I've steered clear of the Navara's as ive heard way too many horror stories of heads cracking at scary low Km's. I know this isn't every Navara but its enough to steer me away!
Yep would be interested in the BT50's, as far as im aware the BT50's and the Rangers share the same engine, but are just rebadged??

Sam from memory, The
Sam from memory, The Ranger/BT50 share gearbox, engine and drive terrain and all other vitals the only differences being cosmetic. Also check out the ranger Xtra cab offerings. You can fit gear and at a pinch a couple of mates in the back.
Cheers

Got a 2010 Ranger double cab
Got a 2010 Ranger double cab XLT, love it, tows great and a good drive.
I got the Auto and it does everything I need and with the rear limited slip diff is great in the soft sand.
Bargain price at the moment and you get all the fruit for your cash. I'd say you can't justify a Hilux or Nissan for the extra 15k they asking over a Ranger. Triton was on my look-see list, but the smaller back tub was it's down fall and did not have the high tow capacity of the Ranger.

ranger
As long as you are the driver in the ranger, I remember a trip to Exxy in Gully's and short ass Jay was in the front with seat forward and the knees were still up in the chest region in the back. Apart from that, seemed like a great car and towed his 5.8 traily with ease.

If you do go the Ranger/BT50
If you do go the Ranger/BT50 check behind the rubber weather seals on the top if the doors/door arches. Have a looksee on the 4x4action forum. It seems that it is a well documented problem with them rusting there. Even the brand new ones. Thats why some ford dealers are selling them with electronic rust protection(Lane Ford Mandurah). Though from some peoples replies on the 4x4 action forum this doesnt even help. But do enough reasearch and it seems there are some that dont get this rusting. I went though this same new car searching for 8 months and ended up with a 2002 3.0l TD Hilux, non intercooled. Mind you my budget was only $24000.00.

I have the 2010 4WD turbo
I have the 2010 4WD turbo diesel Triton and it's done two trips to Gnaraloo and a heap of beach launching inbetween. I also use it for work towing a trailer all day. It doesn't miss a beat and has heaps of towing power. Towing the boat to Gnaraloo we made four stops and it was using roughly half a tank per stop. I also have a mate who had two different late model Navarras and he thought they were underpowered. He now has a Ranger and recons it shits all over what he's had before. So I don't think you can go wrong either way

Ive got a 2008 dual cab xlt
Ive got a 2008 dual cab xlt ranger and love it to bits. Done 110 000km's in it and havnt had a problem with it. I tow my 5m runabout with it up north and around town and it pulls it no worries at all, even has enough balls to overtake at 110k/h with the boat in tow. Ive also towed a 2 1/2 tonne excavator on a heavy duty trailer (so probly over 3tonne all up) around perth a couple dozen times and the ranger loves it! Heaps of tourque down low where u need it! Would definently recomend one!!

The amount of travel north i
The amount of travel north i do Jas, im sure a 4x4 will be a certainty!
I may not have a boat now, but i intent on having this rig for a far while, with a new boat on the horizon.
Space isn't really a virtue as i don't have a family and usually travel with only one other in the car anyway.
Thanks for your input Paul, i took one for a test drive last night and they do have a fair bit of sting for a 4by and yes having that in reserve for highway overtaking is definately an advantage
Cheers,
Sam

Nissan Navara
Hi Sam
I guess I better wave the Nissan Navara flag....end of last year my son bought a 2007 ST-X dual cab turbo diesel manual, 50000kms, roo bar, tow bar for $34,000 and on Monday I took delivery of a brand new MY11 ST-X dual cab turbo diesel manual for $43615 drive away with 12 months rego.
I know that your budget won't stretch to a new one, but if you check out www.carsales.com.au there's a few 2007 D40 models at Westside Autos for $25k....if you can look past them being white!!
The '07 ST-X is rated at 126kW and 403Nm, while my new one is rated at 140kW and 450Nm....towed the 590 Trailblazer behind my son's Nav and it barely knew it was there so I'm guessing it will be the same for me, too.
Best of luck with your search and I hope you find a good one, whatever you decide to buy.
regards

I have a 2009 Colorado Turbo
I have a 2009 Colorado Turbo Diesel Dual Cab....picked it up privately 6 months ago for $27k and it was already decked out with 2inch lift, ARB bull bar, warn winch, spotties, canopy, cooper st tyres, snorkle and had 60k kms on the clock
Got 75k kms on it now and only problem so far is a snapped air cond fan belt which was fixed under warranty
Something like this would fit in your budget
I did a fair bit of research and couldnt find any real problems about the colorado/Isuzu dmax....only weakness seams to be the stock clutch is pretty average but that is a relatively cheap fix if/when it needs replacing and the stock suspension is quite average

Figured out what you want it.
As you probably know I just got a Nissan Navara D40 Dual cab with the 2.5CR diesel. So far Im pretty happy with it. Only down side is lack of ground clearance, even with the 2inch lift. I'll be putting bigger tyres on later. Power? more than enough, otherwise there's chips and exhaust. So far the only thing Ive done to the engine is a K&N filter. Next on the list will be a snorkel and a big 7" GPS/DVD head unit ( due next monday)
Mine is an 06 model and 5spd auto.

Navara STR nothing special
Have a 2010 Navara STR (D22) with the detuned 2.5CR. Done 50K in 12 months with it. Sluggish and without the mod-cons as you expect from a commercial for $32K new. Biggest thing for me is its a smokey engine already which is just not on as far as I'm concerned at those K's. Not to be too negative but next time I wont be looking at another first up.

Agree on Nav
I have a mate with a similar Navara, about a year old, similar k's, same problems. Anyway, his is a work car, so we just tell him to quit bitchin' - he could be paying for his own transport. Whingy bitch.

With these Dual Cabs you are
With these Dual Cabs you are better off getting a Auto.
The dual mass fly wheel setups are crap and is a problem in most makes including Hiluxes and Rangers. Talk to Ernie at Perth Gerabox, Diff and Clutch centre and he will tell you he has seen every make and model come through his workshop. If you believe the hype apparantly only D40 Navara's have this issue which isnt true.
Having said that i did the single mass conversion with Clutch Industries 4Terrain Clutch package at around 125000kms.
I actually did the conversion before my clutch was completely gone.
In hindsight I should have got an auto and would recomend an auto to anyone with regards to these dual cabs.

2010 Ranger PK 4x4 XL Dual Cab
Stay well clear, limited space in the rear seats and massive blind spot on rear passenger side.
Shocker!
