Trolling for Coral trout
Went out on the weekend and stayed overnight out in some cozy bay.
Mission of the trip, Catching a trout trolling! Mission result NADA. Perhaps I was doing something wrong, but changed lures from Halcos, Rapala's, R2S trihos, and colours but especially the trusted gold pattern Halco with only 3 Undersize trout for a hell of trying. Got some bycatch like a thumping Mick jagger trevor etc.
Was using 60lb fluoro leader straight onto 30lb braid, trolling as slow as the boat will go. Covered very likely country on the sounder with bommies ranging from 10-4m, and lucky sometime to not loose a lure to the shallow stuff. Boat speed about 2.7-3knots, with Withdoc in tow about 8m off the back. Port lure 15m back, StarB lure 20m back.
Was I just unlucky or am I doing something wrong.
Interested in comments because mission was trout only, so didnt even bottom bash.

I'd be trolling 6-8knots, trout can ambush prey like you wouldn't believe

Definitely up on the revs
I've had alot of success with Reidy's Goldburn Jacks(blue colours) as they are a 5m lure and they have a good action underwater, that entices the trout from out of their domains. Good luck and keep trying.

Ryan was filming recently upnorth and he said he was going about 6-7knots and did well on the Halco 190 XDD and 160XDD. He was trolling over bommie ground in 10-14m. Trout have no issues in leaving their structure to smash a lure.

I like the deep laser pro's
I like the deep laser pro's as well. Gold is the usual favourite but I have recently been using ones with a red chin or chrome pink and I think they are getting more hits. Around 5 knots works for me.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

i have done really well
on cd 18s the mulie colour one!! when trawling the shallow water the bib sticks out from a mile away!! pb on that lure was an eight kilo out from thevenard in seven metres of water!!! took off like a steam train! and was trawling at nine knots

coral trout lures
we found that rapala cd18s in orange/gold outfished everything including halco crazy deeps at the mackeral islands a couple of years back also the dolphinfish colour worked well too! we must have got 8/9 trout in 1 day on the orange rapala and 2 rankins of 8/10 kg before something kept it!! lol

Hey Neels, mates used troll halco crazy deeps along the pipe opposite flying foam and never missed, I've dived the pipe and can vouch for their presense.

If the Crazy Deep Scorps are blowing out of the water you can take the middle treble out and they will go a bit quicker.

Neels I normally target trout using SP's but like Dodgy if using scorps I always take off the middle treble for that reason, but also for the sake of the fish...that middle treble seems to always f$#k the fish up. Give the x-rap 20 and 30's a go, always get something on them too, my faves.

I target my trout in 3-5m of
I target my trout in 3-5m of water, trolling at 5-6 knots and using lures like the Manns boof bait, 150 scorpions 5m versions, tilsan big barra etc. I find the hot pinks and furo oragne works well for me.
I'm yet to target them in deeper water but it'd be the same principle in the end, run them 30/35m back, biggest we have got is 58cm from 4m of water out at Eaglehawk Is.
Try the back of Legendre near Hauy in the shallows, northeastern side of west lewis, Eaglehawk, northern side of malus, up flying foam western side of conzinc.
your doing nothing wrong just more persistance and more speed plus go with the bright colours

Appreciated as trolling for trout is obviously something new I am trying, being a placky or BB type fisho first.
However it is pleasant just cruizing the shallows and chilling back after a very busy week.
Also spotted about 10 mantas on the way back and chucked some Triho's (saw Steve Correia do this up here on a Vid) at them. Tried my heart out and almost hooked a Manta with a slightly wayward cast (it is funny how quickly you loose accuracy with cast when you used to be able to hit a bucket from 50m with a sinker only after 2 years boating with little landlubbing) but the resident missiles under the wings were nowhere to be seen. One got that close I could have stuck my head under water to see if there was cobes there. Such majestic creatures.

If you are trolling over the pipeline etc dont the lures get stolen by the razor gang, because I use fluoro leader to not spook the trout, or doesnt it matter?

can't answer your question on the pipeline as i haven't fished there much, but i have got a few nice trout in flying foam. when i say a few, i mean i have got one and the wife is up to about 5. Got them up to about 60cm. Trolling at about 5-6 knots with either crazy deeps or other lures that go about 4-5m.
Best so far is my mate getting a 7.5kg 75cm one, but that was on bait in deep water.

Try the red and white Halco too.... Have caught a shitload of GOOD trout on em. Best Ive caught is 74cm and pretty sure it was on a 4-5m diver. Between 6 to 8kts for sure around some bombys and id be very suprised if you dont hook one.

I agreen with Jack, I have caught coral trout while trawling with a red and white deep diver (don't know what brand, just that it had a metal bib).
We travel with just over 1000 revs on our 75hp (don't know how many knots but will pay more attention next time!0
