Saltist V Saltist

So I am looking at buying a new overhead reel to go on my new JigWrex rod. Decided upon the Saltist brand and went into the tackle store to talk to the guys. Been in there twice and both times different guys swayed me different ways. First off I was leaning toward the black Lever Drag 40H but then a different guy told me the normal silver 30 would be better for jigging. I am mainly using it for jigging with a little bit of trolling and putting 50lb braid on it. Anyone willing to share their experience using these reels or knowledge of them would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

the 2 speed is probably out

the 2 speed is probably out of my price range so I was thinking of the single speed as its a bit cheaper. Really like the level drag aspect as opposed to the star drag though

I had, and sold the saltist

I had, and sold the saltist LD30II, I found it a little wide for jigging myself. Much better drags on the newer LD ones though. My PE4/55lb reel is presently a Shimano Talica TAC8, and its got 300m of Daiwa Boat Braid PE4/55lb on it.

i used to have the silver star drag saltist 40 but some lowlife stole it i never had a drama with it i cought many big sambos up to 30kgs and plenty of dhuis and other fish with it.no complaints with it at all! when insurance came through i replaced it with the black leverdrag  saltist 40 and i can tell u i am really happy with it i prefur the lever drag to the star drag just personall preferance really!cought plenty big sambos with the new reel and teamed with my xoga i have stopped some massive sambos with them and dont have a single complaint about it another thing i love about it is how light it is it only weighs 900grams with braid and rod can fish for hours comfortably! hope this helps cheers adam

If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

Try Ebay Daz

I just bought a saltist LD30 2 speed for $325 Au delivered to my door from the States. Mine is for trolling and bottom not really jigging but you can get good reels at good price from the link below (best I could track down) I prefer lever drag.

Dollar was above parity then but shouldnt affect you too much now.

would I be right in thinking that with the level drag models, there is a wide and narrow spool? how do you know which one you are buying if its off ebay??

Not really. They make each

Not really. They make each sideplate size, in two widths, ie; thin one is 20, the wide one is 30.

checked out some prices on ebay - thinking I may as well get a 2-speed. Are these good for bottom fishing? or are they mainly used for trolling??

I use mine both ways. It is good for trolling and bashing. When trolling I just use a long wind on shock leader with the braid (which I know is not the best for trolling with no stretch) and this seam to help me cover both bases. However primarily a BB reel.

nice cheers mate, that's what I wanted to hear.

so do you have it in low gear when you are getting those big fish off the bottom, then crank it into high gear to pull them to the top?
