Trolling, help?

Hey guys. Couple questions to ask. I have a TLD30 2 speed and a torium 30 both on 15 to 24 kilo overheads. Are these any good for trolling for mackies etc up north? If so what line will i need because i currently have braid on both? Braid is no good for trolling is it? Thanks marko

both rods should hold up ok, i was gettin some pretty decent macks up north last year with a tld 25 on a backbone 15kg and a tekota 800 on a backbone aswell, held up pretty well for not havin to pay massive $$$$. tld 25 has lo-stretch, tekota has braid.

Can certainly still troll

Sun, 2010-10-24 18:05

Can certainly still troll with braid. Both those outfits will be fine for macks.

I would run a fairly long mono leader (4-6m of 100lb or similar) as a windon.

Mono is definately better soaking up the first initial hit but I would leave that for a dedicated trolling rig.

Reels

Both reels/rods should be fine to use for that purpose, mono is the better option for trolling, a bit of stretch comes in handy on pelagics.

No problem

that sorta gear is in the right area. Trolling for mackies isn't as demanding as trolling for Marlin/Sails or Large Tuna. Braid is OK for trolling for mackies, you just want to put a wind-on leader on between your mainline and wire trace. Say 10m of 80lb. Also a good idea to have your drag set a little lighter when it's in the holder, then crank it up once the fish is onWink

id be putting a longer mono

Sun, 2010-10-24 18:22

id be putting a longer mono leader than most are suggesting .. i prefer to have enough mono leader to still have a quite a few wraps on the reel once the lure is in possition .. all of my penn's run braid with 60m - 100m of mono topshots .. this is a personal thing i suppose but ive seen to many big fish lost trolling short leaders .. if you back the drag off you might be fine with short leaders : but then you might not set hooks if you tangle with a billie . .. Not sure what you mean about

Not sure what you mean about the hookup bit. I can set hooks ok on 6 and 8kg mono.

Sun, 2010-10-24 18:24

I probably would not fit enough mono on the tld for this sort of fishing would i? How heavy should the wire trace be?

As Daz has said

Sun, 2010-10-24 18:44

run some single strand on the lure but make sure you take the splitring off first. Also take enough to re do your lures as they need it, as it does fatigue after a few fish and can let go and do damage to the person on the leader.

i havent been trolling yet

Sun, 2010-10-24 18:42

i havent been trolling yet but ive been reading heaps of articles and got a bit of help from some people on here.

the set up im usingin perth is a TLD20 with 15kg line, TLD25 15kg line and a TLD15 with 10kg line.  on the 20,25 im going to run halco normal 190, and a crazy deep190, and out further a 160 shallow runner for tuna. the leader im going to use is 100lb for the wind on's and 119lb wire. brody has been the one to help me with the wire bit im only going to use a short amount of it say 30cms to a snap.

but then again some people recon that 150lb wind on and no leader is the go because they get more strikes but then they might lose their lures, im going to stick with wire and not lose my lure.

i hope that helped..

deep divers, remember you alone know you are fishing for mackies, always be prepared for sails and marlin

Thanks for that mate. The more help the better :D What type of mono is good for trolling. I might re spool the tld30 with mono and leave the torium with braid as it is still new braid.

Yep, no probs

with a TLD Hoookt. Personally i'd run Platypus low stretch mono 15kg. Be prepared to chase if you hook a largish Marlin/ YFT or BIG Wahoo. Line burners is an understatement!

We have caught sails on TLD

Sun, 2010-10-24 19:00

We have caught sails on TLD 15's, 25's using 10kg line no dramas at all, they love it. As uncle says all it does is holds the line, you don't skull drag em in.

Was talking to a bloke recently who crews the big game boats out of Cairns and reckons they often chase the big blacks over there on 6kg line. Wanna be a f^%$#ng big reel!!!

Cheers

nope

I was the original deckie on that charter and will admit that Jay has no clue when it comes to trolling, maybe he has learnt by now. Having a few lures out and then the skipper doing a tight 180o turn over the spread without warning is embarrasing,  stopping suddenly for a bottom bounce whilst the lures are still out doesnt help either. Good luck.

mate the 2 reels are more

Mon, 2010-10-25 07:32

mate the 2 reels are more than enough for any mackie you are ever going to catch, and most marlin that you will get in WA aren't going to trouble you either.
As for wire when trolling for macks, I reckon I've lost more lures to fish hitting the swivels where my mainline joins the wire than what I have when trolling without wire. Most of the time I just run a 100lb leader straight to my lure and rarely get bitten off.
As for trolling with braid, if you set your drag appropriately, you will have no trouble pulling hooks. Just run a softer strike drag when trolling with braid, however mono is more forgiving. If these reels are striclty trolling reels, then spool with mono, if they are to double as bottom bouncers, then troll with braid but just keep an eye on the settings.

As mullows siad above, no problems

Mon, 2010-10-25 08:02

Mackies usually have an initial burst of energy, and after that they are easily controlled with the two reels you mention. I was drift baiting with a Mulie for trout on a Barra impoundment overhead with a Curado low profile Ohead, when a big mack of 15-20kg decided to spoil my trout attempts. Now that was fun, but still easily managed to bring it to the boat.

Not really

Mon, 2010-10-25 15:38

i've found it helps get them close to the back of the boat but there not essential. A few of my mates that spear them up north troll teasers and hookless minnows until they come up then they jump inWink
