 best place to start with

best place to start with would be in the water.. they could be anywhere from woodies out to the back of rotto, so your guess would be as good as anyones , but i would say anywhere out the back of a reef structure or around rotto

if your looking at staying

if your looking at staying inshore go for a troll around woodies because alot of macks have been caught off and around the jetty this summer or try the back of Five Fathom Bank seen a few boats haul in good size mackies trolling

Even though my uncle has a boat were not familiar with local reef locations etc so either north or south was maybee thinking the stretch of reef  behind the northern beaches or somewhere behind garden island

As i said pretty clueless in this regard

The boat hardly gets taken out in the couple of years he has had it

Fads ?

Just wondering if the fads are a viable proposition remembering the boats a 4.75 only I know we would have to really checkout first  the forcast for swell and be in early before the wind comes up

But just how far past the west end of Rotto are they

My mate used to go out in a boat of similar size  was he just insane

Well, getting there wont be a problem. Getting back on the other hand....

Actually, you could get there and back no problems if it was a good day but most people would advise against it as weather can change pretty easily from the forecast and its a loooong way out for a small boat. Besides, how many great days are there, and how many forecasted great days live up to the forecast? (The best day i've ever been out in perth was forecast as 12kN+ all day, but was less than 5 all day). If you're not really very experienced with boating its not really advisable on any boat.

Luckily you dont need to hit the FAD's if you want tuna and macks. Macks are in closer and tuna are often in 40m or so.

For macks at rotto, its only a mile or two at most from west end. Otherwise as you said, on the five fathom past garden island or the north reefs. Out of Hillarys and north theres actually two reef lines. You have the reefs where the swell breaks, then theres a bit of a trough, then the 3 mile reef which runs pretty much all the way up. They kinda run together past the centaur marker (south of Hillarys). Often tuna are at the back of the three mile. Have heard macks are on the three mile, but I dont know which bit they mean (some people dont seem to mention a difference between the two reef sets)

Yeah mate if ur uncles not

Yeah mate if ur uncles not that experienced then i wouldnt be heading out to the fads, plus if ur targeting mackies then u dont wanna be trolling in 100m's of water anyway, generaly people chase them in less then 40m's. If uve got a chart plotter, chart or gps then ull have no trouble geting out behind the 3mile reef NOR and have a troll out there. Just hope its not too weedy
