Trolling patterns / hooks?

off to monkey mia in april and the blowholes at end of may.  my questions relate to what trolling patterns does everyone use.  in the past i have trolled at about 6.5 knts with 2 shallow lures straight behind each stern quarter, and two deep divers out wide on each side and closer to the boat.  i have read about trolling a popper or giant trembler in place of the shallow lures.  does anyone do this?  IMO, the popper could jump all over the place and tangle everything.  opinions?

also, i have seen trebles being replaced with single hooks.  is this worth while, and hook opening up or down?

I generally run the deeper divers in closer as apposed to the shallower divers as the shallow ones are going to be less visible in the wash. The deeper ones will be well below the wash, making them more visible. Most of my trolling lures run singles now for better penetration. I remove the middle hook usually as a flapping tuna or macky on the deck with two sets of trebles never ends well.

I am running either a downward facing middle (single) hook with an upward facing rear hook or just the downward middle hook on its own.  Hook up rates don't appear to differ much with either combo (fishing in SA mainly for bluefin i.e. no maccies etc) and on the lures with both middle and rear the hookup tends to be on the centre hook (strike appears to be at the head of the lure). have noticed the lure swims with a wider action without the rear hook (no drag on rear of lure).  Definately better for the fish if releasing with the singles as less damage to the fish and safer for the anglers as well as Flangies commented.

Cheers

 Forget about trolling

Forget about trolling poppers at 6 knots or more, get some Richter Soft Grassy skirted lures (lumo green is dynamite for tuna and pink/white is a good allrounder) and rig them with 2 - 3m of 200lb mono and a single 8/0 hook. They are light enough to work properly at low speed when trolling divers but will handle 8 - 10 knots if you want to.
