Trolling for Salmon

Hey guys,

Just wondering what type of lures people are using when trolling for salmon? I'm guessing once you find a school they will almost take anything but while under motor while looking for the schools what do people find successful hanging out the back and what speeds do you motor at?

Cheers

Any sort of bibbed minnow...

...Halco laser pro 160/190, Rapala (either CD or Xrap), the 130mm Smilin Jacks...the list goes on. Colours don't really matter, and I prefer shallow divers, which stay within the top 2-3 metres.

Really, anything will work...even a popper! And I'm pretty happy with the result since I've changed all my salmon lures(both casting and trolling) over to single hooks.

On the weekend we picked up

On the weekend we picked up 10 with Smilin Jacks (blue), got a hit with an orange popper, got nothing with C-Gars and got one on a Halco Hamma.

Per above, shallow divers did it for me, doing 5-6 knots to make them commit to the hit. If you are going too slow then they can come and have a look before deciding.

+1 on Singles

Run one single on all my Salmon Lures, point up on the rear, I also crush the barbs.  Since doing that I have only had one fish hooked in the throat, every other one has been hooked through the corner of the jaw and released strongly.  Hookup rate seems better than trebles and I lose far less during the fight.  Only disadvantage is my hookup rate on Tailor in the same area was less than ideal, am thinking point down may work better for them...

Tailor and singles...

...yeah, broady, they don't seem to work as well on tailor. Salmon tend to inhale lures  but tailor have more of a slashing strike, which, unfortunately, is better suited for trebles.
