Trouble with the big fellas -- Knot

After listening to all the shark stuff down south tried on a very blustery day up here in Dampier to have some shark fun. Metal trace with 9/0 Hook through the head and tail of a flag filleted. Certainly a nice take and fight, but I am sure despite the culprit heading for the reef it was a Noah. Now I am very lazy, but tie in the 50lb braid a modified Palomar to the swivel. It is 3 loops through the swivel, and a figure 8 double knot rather than a wrapped over granny to complete (with a sh*t load of slober to lube). I believe in this but the feeling that followed was not grind vs reef, it was pure "ping", and I am sure the braid didnt just pop. I am to lazy for Noah's to tie a Bimini/GT etc but somehow my mod Palomar failed IMO. Any suggestion as I am going to catch this particular shark that I have seen at least 3 times hounding one of my favourite "sure to catch" a feed spot. Neels

GT knot. You'll only need to

GT knot. You'll only need to tie it once if you dont get pinged off by reef ;)

If going via a swivel - bimini to multiple cats paw.

Bimimi to uni

would be a better option if going via a swivel.

If you have a bimini, and you're attaching to a swivel, why bother doing a knot that isnt as strong and takes longer to tie?

Because if one of the strands

of the bimimi breaks the cats paw knot will more than likely unravel.  If one strands of the bimimi breaks with a uni you are still in with a chance.

wouldnt it be easier to put

wouldnt it be easier to put on a mono leader still and just crimp on the swivel ?

dont be so lazy Neels  :)

your gear is only as good as the weakest link .. if you use a shit knot then only target shit fish .. if you want to tangle with the big boys then  do it properly or your just wasting your time. JMO :)

My problem is always trying to get back fishing as fast as I can. Over the years my modified Palomar has never slipped. The basic loops through the Palomar with 3 wraps is well known, the other part of the knot is complicated but tought to me by a surgeon mate, but I can tie it fast. It is easier to say its like a figure 8 knot but something a little more solid that surgeons use to hold our guts together, then loop the last loop over the swivel like a normal Palomar.

I have tested it with weights and it doesn't "normally" slip, but in this case I wasnt sure. It rated similar to a Bimini and 12catspaw.

I only use the best swivels, leader, and I dont mind the Finns braid.

But obviously if I want the standup tackle with a big fella I might have to tie the Bimini GT and stop being so fast to get back in fishing!!!!!

I do normally tie the Bimini's at home anyway, and I go out with at least 5 rods each all loaded for different uses, but I like strong snaps so I can quickly change terminal setup. That would say I can very quickly turn the troll rigs into bottom bouncers, because the trolling will double.
