so the thin red colour above the white line to the right of screen, you interpret as fish sitting on the bottom?

Great pic there Wangler.
You do know if you had a Simrad with Chirp you would have been able to count the number of crays in it too I hear ;)
Got to love the Furuno 295. Hard to beat in a rec boat.

I'm convinced, but....
I'm very keen to fish the 200-400 metre zone. I'm trying to work out what the best setup is for the sounder. So the FCV-295 seems like what I need. I have a 7.5m plate alloy boat, so through hull seems like the only way to go. I've done some googling, and can see a nice Airmar 1KW through Hull Stainless transducer (which needs the isolation sleeve to prevent corrosion), but I can't seem to find an equivalent 2KW or 3KW version. Can someone point me in the right direction?

The problem with the more
The problem with the more powerful units is that they are also bigger and don't fit into the small package of the thru-hulls, in fact they split the B260 into the SS264N which is two small thru-hull units.
I think you have to go for a R99 or make a FG-skinned wetbox which is pretty evil for ali.

Any experiences with 1KW Airmar in deep water
So has anyone had practical experience using a 1KW SS264N through hull on a FCV-295 in say 400 metres. If I can get away with 1KW then that's far easier than the 2KW jobs. Looks like they are huge and only recommended for large boats.

Better than my Simrad @ 28.8m ? - maybe.
Better than my Simrad @ 28.8m with down/side scan on ? - maybe not.
Better than my setup 600W setup out deep ? - absolutely !
BUT !! .........
I CAN press a button to take a screen shot and not have to worry about my camera focussing, which is what REALLY makes a good sounder .... (not) hehe.

I will ignore the ones
I will ignore the ones that need to be ignored and the picture poster with the orange Simrod Glassy X1 fishfinder is not one of them, it is a great & funny pizztake.
The new Broadband sounder modules are not cumbersome and will outperform a traditional 3 KW sonar transducer with a lot more signals being send out and being received/processed that will result in clearer separation/detail of what is down there.
They are low power and low noise.
The structure scan is just great fun and a marvel to see the detail with the overlay imaging to get a 3D type picture of the surrouds under water
The old style transducers will work and are good but there is now a better system out there.
If you are happy with your current setup, great that is what it is all about.
If you are contemplating a new unit, then do a bit of research, maybe go to the upcoming boat show and see what there is displayed
I have and it has opened my eyes.
The head units are the key of being able to run the new technology as the data processing capabilities is where it stands or falls, now and in the near future.
And I know it is only about a bit of fun and a hobby to fill in some leisure time.
And NO I do NOT work in the recreational boating electronics industry

So Gastro , is any of this information your imparting on us poor unwashed ( not in my case I have a bathtub ) gained from real life experience or is it just what you`ve read ?? Seeing as you wont tell us when or where you get your immense knowledge ( "dont know who or what I am and I want to keep it that way " , or some shit like that you said somewhere ,what are you an SAS sounder operator or something?? ) i`m thinking its the sales hype you`ve read ?

heh spot on marble
Id say the broadband technology will be the way of future sounders, but for 99% of us right now they are not due to price and mostly unreviewed by the commercial and public fishermen.
I stand to be corrected but ive been asking about in the commercial industry and im not hearing anything?
Has anyone seen one in action other than the simrad company reviews or more than 13ft of water.
If what they boast is true, sounding in the deep will be alot easier.

FCV295 Vs Simrad Chirp
Hey readers.
Spent 6 months waisting time, fuel and hair on Simrad BSM2 with Airmar R599 chirp system.
Got rid of the Simrad and installed Furuno FCV295 with the R599 (3Kw dual frequency)
The R599 is a wet box in a Haines Hunter 650 classic. Huge unit that transducer. You can feel the tranny ping in the hull.
The difference is chalk and cheese.
For a rec boat this is the best I have seen.
You can pic individual fish on a bait. Does not seem fair does it.

Please give us some
Please give us some information on what the problem was with Simrad gear and what simrad equipment was used.
From what I know your R599 transducer is not a broadband (CHIRP) transducer but a dual band one.
That is why it works well on the Furuno.

Simrad chirp
Ok we installed a R599 which is the latest 3kw Chirp transducer from Airmar. Wet box in hull install.m
This was connected to a Simrad BSM2 sounder modular and it was driven by a Simrad NSE 12.
We had all manner of issues in deep water which is what Chirp is for. The system would loose the bottom randomly, clutter was terrible and it would never produce clear images as promised.
You could tune the frequency of the Chirp but it made loosing the bottom more frequent and when the bottom was lost you had no bottom lock eith dealer and directly with Simrad we were provided with software updates for both the BSM2 and the NSE but these only made it worse.
The frustrating part of it all was that even the techs from Simrad who were on the boat on a number of occasions could not sort it out. If they could not sort it who could....
From what I know and people I have talked to in the rec industry I am not the only one with a bad Simrad Chirp experience.
I am an electronics tradesman and I did the install myself however I even questiond my own work so I had it checked by the dealer as well.
We gave up in the end due to countless hours testing and not fishing not to mention all the waisted fuel travelling out to the canyon.
We put in a FCV 295 and were extremely impressed straight away. Yes it's not chirp but you can run high and low frequency simultaneously and it runs the Airmar 599 transducer perfectly. You can hear and feel the transducer ping in the hull.
I do not want to bag out Simrad which I am not. I still use the Simrad NSE as my plotter and it is awesome just their sounder technology is not up to the spec of Furuno. I feel like the Simrad chirp has been release to early without enough product R&D.

Well well well
pretty hard to discredit that experience. Even the Simrad techs couldn't sort it? What a joke.
Sounds like it that Simrad chirp technology is a complete waste of time and money.
Not sure why anyone would bother when you consider the results you get with the market leader, Furuno.

Simrad just released beta sw
Simrad just released beta sw as RC, v1.3 had performance issues, but at least it was reliable, 1.4 was so bad they withdrew it, 1.5 is working ok for most people.
Hopefully they sort their bugs, Furuno are still ironing a few out before they release their gear.

Don't think the fact that broadband had arrived was ever in doubt though glastro, just the suggestion that it blew everything else off the planet.
In truth , that sidescan looks the goods for 3 mile and other shallow area's

Dude, I published an article
Dude, I published an article on tackletester.com on Simrad Chirp, in April 2011, and probably here as well, which is well before you got on the bandwagon/soapbox. We're all very aware that it is coming, and have hopes that it is good.
Just the difference is, when someone asks for a sounder recommendations, for say $1200 - $5k, you seem to relentless advocate Simrad units that cost about $10k, and don't yet really work that well, or spout mistruths about conventional equipment.

When you are so informed then
When you are so informed then have a look at a few packages, (even on Ebay and from Australia) that will give the person who asked the question of equipment up to $5K
A Simrad 12" NSE, a BSM1 and GPS for about $4.5k ready to go never mind a 8"systemwith similair package, coming in well below that.
These units can be expanded/updated with HD radar, auto pilot, structure scan and the like.
Garmin is in the same price bracket and with simiair features
I did not ever say that conventional equipment including Furuno, is not good, just that there is a new and I think better system been brought on the market and the company who did so so far is Simrad and Garmin.
The for ever personal angle of insinuations from you and your girlfriends is laughable.
It gets in the way of other members on here who might want to be alerted on this forum about what is out in the market place.
I have learned a great deal on this forum about fishing and made some good (fishing)friends because people do share their knowledge.
There has been very little discussion on these new sounders and therefore I made , it seems, the mistake of alerting members on this new development.

"The for ever personal angle of insinuations from you and your girlfriends is laughable."
I LOLed.
Buddy, we're just sticking to the facts, you're delivering the insinuations.
$4.5k for chirp? Ahh no, and not ready to go, the BSM-1 you mention is not a chirp device and doesn't support chirp transducers. You need a BSM-2 instead and a chirp transducer.
An NSE12 is around $4500, the BSM-2 is around $2k, and then a transducer on top, and they start at $1700.
But you know that because you're the expert right ;)
