Tuesday @ 2 Rocks

After a top day Sunday I thought after checking out Seabreeze I would do another trip to two rocks.

My 5 year old on Sunday managed to pull in the 10kg Dhuy on his 3 kg ugly stick(10kg line) with a little help from his 8 year old brother. Picture attached. Igot video too should see the bend & hear the exitement, haha!

Was out there again today, put in at 10am just as the wind was picking up decided to go south west into the wind, as to have an easy ride back in the forcast 23 knots.
with the strong wind I was drifting at 2-3 knots. Finding fish ok on the Furuno 585 sounder, but no takers exept for a couple Sgt Bakers.

Went as far as gemini Wreck (nothing taking my Jigz) , then out west to 40meters (dropped baits in front of some solid fish on the sounder) then north till WNW of 2 rocks(same again, No takers)

Big swell and fast drift I recon were my down fall.

Used Preium Occy & SGT Baker fillets, the Almanac looked ok, Oh well better luck next time.

Any tips fellas?

What is the ideal drift speed, I maybe should of put the sea anchor out?

cheers

Justin

Sea Anchor

Wed, 2009-01-14 07:24

Nice fish Justin, great to see the young fellas pulling in a decent fish; a day to remember for sure.

Whenever I'm out on the water we nearly always have the sea anchor out. A drift between 0.6 and 1 knot is pretty much the zone you need to be in. Otherwise the bait is moving to quickly and as granta said you will need more line/weight to stay in the strike zone.

Three days without it and I get a little jumpy

Nice 10kg Dhu PB for young Poole and good to see ya out there Justin & into it!

Sea anchor a must unless it "cant open up". If the current is pumping up there/quite often its also a factor. Drift speen between 0.2 - 0.7 knots "max" for quality fish and 1 knot its all over!

I agree with Ryan

Sea anchor is a must and use your GPS to check drift speed rather than your sounder as it will be picking up water movement rather than speed over ground. Particularly important when a current is running.
Fantastic effort from the boys. I'd be proud as punch if my kids could land something that big. Puts a lot of us old fellas to shame.
Good on em!

They are very cunning,

they keep me busy tying rigs, baiting hooks, feeding them, making sure they have enough sun screen on, refereeing the odd blue and sounding around skippering the boat trying to find fish for the buggers etc etc..

they better had feed me, they work me hard, haha!

Its all good though..Wink

Thanks for the advice

Wed, 2009-01-14 23:07

Thanks guys for the advice, and I told the boys they are famous now, & showed them there pix and read the coments they are well chuffed!

I have got a huge sea anchor, it will be definatly getting used abit more now you  have you have identified my error,

I notice some boats use it off the back of the boat is there any other reason for that other than easy of access? it seems no drama out the front of the center console, though these half cabbin boats that you cant even walk around i can see the advatage there.

thanks again

we always set the drift

Thu, 2009-01-15 03:34

we always set the drift anchor off the port side as we find it easier to fish a few lines (and my wife fishes that side) only 1 of 4 lines goes under the boat as we usually fish 4

used to have it at the back and found we took the odd wave over the back (in an 18 footer) so we changed for the better, you will find most set them out the side
