Keep your eye out for birds

Sun, 2009-11-29 18:46

Keep your eye out for birds (particularly ones diving into the water) a good sign of tuna or other predators feeding.

Rapala X-raps are good as they can handle a bit of speed and take the knocks etc without having to be tuned.  Christmas skirts as in the small ones with tinsel and many others including feathersa and plastic "squid' skirts also work.  A teaser will also help attract fish if searching. Speed depends on the lures but 8-9 knots is a good start.

Are there are specific types

Wed, 2009-12-02 11:37

Are there are specific types of teasers that work well for tunas in particular? E.g. theres witchdoctor types, mylar fish schools, birds, etc.

I've only caught smaller ones (on christmas trees and feathers) but would love to get into some bigger ones.

Don't be afraid trolling at

Sun, 2009-11-29 19:27

Don't be afraid trolling at greater speeds either.  Tuna are quite capable of hitting lures trolled at speeds of up to and probably more than 18kts.  There is a lot that has been written about high speed trolling and the lures / tackle best suited.  Google it.

Tuna teasers

Thu, 2009-12-17 12:44

Hlokk - As far as teasers for tuna go I assume anything will work as long as it creates splash or flash or preferably both.

I use two boone birds approx 1 metre apart followed by 4 glitter bird floats (for the flash) also spaced a metre apart and a few heavy swivels on the rig to prevent twisting.  I find this rig easy to use and pull in particularly if I happen to be alone (have just left it floating around at times but try not to in case the fish dives under it at the boat etc).  Will see if I can post some video of it next time I'm using it (prob April 2010).

Have heard of peple rigging compact discs into the line as well for flash and even using a string of beer cans (just large poppers I guess).

Cheers Paul

there are heaps

Thu, 2009-12-17 13:08

of 2/3 kilo southern blue fin out the back of the bank at the moment had a ball with them on sunday . i prefer to flick soft plastics or  metal slices or those little imatation blue bait lures at the schools . just sit along side the school and toss a lure in once you get one hooked up turn off you motor and the school will hang around the hooked fish   we had a schiool hang aruond for over 40 minutes on the week end just dropped a lure in when the other fish got close to being landed and hook up staight away we would have landed at least a dozen biggest went abou 4kilo

i have found trolling u get the odd one or to but they get spooked by the boat to easy and go deep plus its lots more fun 0n 2/4 kilo line than trolling with 10/15 kilo gear

we have taken them just out

Thu, 2009-12-17 23:04

we have taken them just out behind garden isl in less than 30mtrs of water, some have gone over the 5kg size but mostly around the 3 to 4 kg. as mentioned look for the bird action , generally run the x rap or similar types of lure and i dont think the color realy matters when they are firing
