Underwater camera/video - looking for suggestion
Submitted by Simo_ on Tue, 2012-03-06 23:35
I'm thinking about getting an underwater camera that can do good video. just wondering what others have and what people recommend. Not looking to spend too much but want something good.
Cheers

Hero
Gopro Hero 2 gets another vote here, but if your going to be doing a lot of underwater shooting check out Snake River Protoyping. Because the Hero 2 has the fish eye lense it can struggle to focus underwater. With the flat lense housing and cyan filter the footage is awesome. Check out the Gopro forum and have a look at some of the footage from a few of the guys.

Rumour has it
They're releasing a housing with flat lens soon to alleviate this, there are already aftermarket Go pro housings with flat lens available also :-)

What depth are you looking to take it to Simo? There wont be any cameras without a separate waterproof casing that you can take scuba diving for example. I'd only use the 10m ones for snorkelling unless you are just swimming at the surface either. 3m doesnt give a lot of wiggle room if you're swimming down.

olympus
i've got an olympus one thats been really good. not sure on the model but it's drop proof 3m and water proof to 10m and takes video underwater aswell. i've used it in salt and chlorine with no dramas, dropped it heaps of times onto concrete and still good as new. think it was around $500 mark

Been through 2 olympus's now, battery compartment isn't sealed as well as it should be! Got a lumix now, too scared to take it underwater though!

if you go with any of the
if you go with any of the smaller cameras. they recomend to soak the camera in fresh water for about 10 min after it has been in salt water.

Just got a go pro today
Now all i need to do is get out on the water and try it.
I was looking at the aftermarket flat lense, but was told if I use that and it leaks, the warranty will not be valid on the camera.

I you use the standard housing and it leaks
The warranty is also void, it happened to a workmate, the seal had some grit he didn't notice allowing a leak, go pro wouldn't replace it. Just be careful when clamping the cover shut :-)

GoPro at Gerry Gibbs
Gerry Gibbs Camera House in Cannington has possibly the biggest range for GoPro locally.
Heaps of accessories available and in stock.
You will still get cheaper buying online, but if you want it now buy local !
And no...I don't work there in case anyone is thinking.

I'm suprised no one has
I'm suprised no one has mentioned the Contour before now. I've got a GoPro HD and the Contour +GPS and the GoPro barely gets a run these days.
