Unusual encounter

Today i was 300m offhshore in the scarborough to floreat area at 10m depth where I was pulling in whiting....

A large fish atleast 80cm that resembled a mackeral followed up a whiting and almost took it. The odd whiting had scratches and some had even been biten.

Then about 30 minutes later literally 10-15 metres from the boat a school of medium size fish, perhaps 50cm, were almost jumping out of the water with their tails flicking everywhere. Looked as though they were trying to evade something.  Had sharp tails looked a little like trevally, maybe juvenile giant trevally?

After seeing my whiting being chased i put out a mulie connected to a float, and a live yellow tail on another line. This was before the fish started jumping out, but they didnt go for the mulie which is very surprising, hence my thoughts on them trying to evade something.

But...

- What fish resembles a mackerel and is found in sandy spots?

Macky or pike first

Sounds like a small macky, bonito or pike first but the school of fish sounds like buffs "tailing", where they school up and circle with the tips of their tails just breaking the surface.
