Unusual fish catches, sightings in marinas?
Submitted by GlennO87 on Tue, 2011-10-25 22:04
I know a few people on here have caught some weird things in marinas. Needed to get out today just took the flick rods down to AQUA at Hillarys with a mate, fished off the jetty, few small whiting, what was interesting is my mate reeled in his whiting, following it was a Yellowtail King Fish, about 3ft long, fat, and probably 2-3kg. Thing came in twice following whiting, its fins lit up blue under the water, with bits of yellow coming through and the body a greenish colour.....Was odd but very cool to see. Spun me right out.
anyone else seen or caught anything ?

Mindaries boat ramp
Yeah Glenn, i have seen sambo's, cuttlefish, bronzies, seal's, dolphin's at mindaries boat ramp, but have never seen kingies, would have been fun if it smashed the whiting and got hooked.

a couple of years ago in Port
a couple of years ago in Port Lincoln SA there was a very lost broadbill inside the marina there. There have been some big southern bluefin tuna inside there too, no doubt they followed the towed cages into the bay but the broady is anyone's guess

Jack's ?
Not saying it can't happen, but 2 years ago a friend of mine claimed to catch a Jack inside mindarie , he was 100% sure and said he had studied species online and ID'd it as a Mangrove Jack.
I disputed his claim and asked if he kept the fish. He did and had it at home in the freezer whole. I went around and sure enough it was a Goat fish LOL .

In teh Swan River
Many years ago I lived in Claremont and myself and a buddy sent most of our school holidays down at the Claremont Yacht club. There was one year when a couple of huge Samson fish took up residence at the club. We would have chopper tailor taken off hooks and we did hook about 3 of 4 with 150lb hand lines but the fight did not last long around the pylons.

Townsville has a big resident Barra as well and last time I saw it was around 2006 and it was still there.
Also no fishing allowed among the moored boats, so he was pretty safe

i do most of my fishing from
i do most of my fishing from a north merto marina and have been fishing here for 7 years now and ive caught big sambos, pinkies, tailor to 80cm, sharks, rays, mulloway to 20kg, whiting, big silver and black bream, squid, cuttlefish and even seen a few albino seals. also seen some small tuna last summer swimming around inside. Its amazing what calls the local rock wall home if you put some effort into looking. Just sickens me to see people taking undersize fish and not following bag limits and also PLEASE TAKE YOUR RUBBISH WITH YOU!!! its not hard and if we look after these places we will continue to see all these species for ages to come.
sorry about the rant.
cheers Chris.

Anyone seen the rsident gropers at steep point.... if you can get your macks past the sharks, these two come out from under the cliff and open their 6' wide mouths and everything within 3 metres gets sucked in!!!

There was a dolphin inside Hillarys last night, didnt surprise me at all, either would a seal.....i know small sharks come in....

and because we were in a
and because we were in a serious sailing regatta, we had sanded all the antifoul off the boat, so we had to clean it every second day. this "marina" was at fumacino (i hope i spelt that right) which is down river of rome. when we saw the state of the marina, we motored about 3 mile off the coast, cut the motor and all jumped over the side to clean the hull.... no one was going swimming in that marina! when people tell the swan river is dirty, i tell they ain't seen nothin!

+1
I find plastic's will not produce as much fish inside the marina's, but will get you the bigger fish if you fish the structure.
