Upcoming Swell & Cray Pots

Looks like Sunday evening is planning to bring a cracker swell (4.3m+ in Perth) with some solid SW winds to accompany ... just wondering what everyone is planning to do with their cray pots currently out. I'm tossing up between bring them back in to the pen; leaving them out in the deeper water (30 meters) but on the eastern side of the reef on the sand (so they don't blow into a reef); Riding it out where they currently are in 1820m; or bringing temporarily inside the 3 mile. Thoughts? NB: Pots are currently heavily weighted (2 ballasts in each)wooden pots.

Cheers
J

With 4 days to go before I need to make a decision on whether to pull my shallow pots in I'll wait and see if the forecast is going to be accurate or not.

our will stay in off margs

Fri, 2017-12-15 11:35

our will stay in off margs coast .........had em out in 6m + with min problems , just reset them away from heavy reef and breaker territory ,,,enough rope to let em rise up on the swell/seas and heavy as in the ballast dept

anyone leaving them out should be baiting up heavy and full on sat ..

I’ve still got 2 brake rotors here that are about 9kg each what would make good weights since they sit down flat. Anyone want them? There yours.

from the sounds of things, looks like i ended up getting my potts in too late and have missed most of the action anyway...just out of interest....after this run is there much chance of catching during the rest of the season?

They will slow down over January-Feb but will pick up again after that. I'd still have a crack mate.

Thu, 2017-12-14 13:21

what sort of weight would people generally use, I have 3/4 pots with the metal bottoms.... for a storm like this, if moving into shallow sandy water.... 5kg ? more? I have an old weight set I am happy to sacrifice...lol...exercise....

I think some of you fellas

I think some of you fellas aren't catching on.......

You dont want to bring pots into shallower water!

Either bring them home or.... Take them out wide with plenty of rope/weight as suggested by Hezzy and Johnny....

Swell lines jump up when they hit the shallows and will take your pots with them regardless of how well weighted you think you have them.....

Fri, 2017-12-15 09:11

Yeah same as you seagoat, we'll be doing a quick dash in the morning to bring them.. then probably invest in some longer ropes for them while they're out of the water so we can get into the 30s over Jan

pots out until mid jan

Sun, 2017-12-17 17:11

i was told last year to get my pots out before the xmas week as thats the time they get stolen,

i was a non believer but they did get stolen, so we have bagged this year and brought them in, not worth the risk,

i heard the pots get picked up and taken to rotto over xmas them left ,,,

pisses you off because one would think if you can afford a big fucking boat then surely you could afford your own pot,

Mon, 2017-12-18 13:27

Just been to eat my lunch at Woodman point. Chop is gusting from the SW and pushing the breakers over the rock wall... That is all from the wind as it protected from the swell behind GI.

Swell didn't make forecast?

Tue, 2017-12-19 11:32

Probably only got 2 metres up here, which was around what Fishranger forecast,--Willyweather was giving stiupid numbers, and had been all week. nice this morning, light SE with a little left over swell and slop. Crays very red, but that seems to be the story of it all up here so far. Only had one all-white day, which was when I set them when I got home from working away.

My pots were in 10 mts west of Penguin Island. Steel bottom + 7.5kgs ballast, didn't move anywhere. Didn't load them enough with bait though as it was all gone. Got 5 reds out of them after 4 day soak

Pulled ours in from behind Carnac on Saturday and managed 12 from 2 pots, 50/50 reds and whites decent sizes for both, was happy with that
Dropped them back in the water this morning in the same spot so see how we go over the next week.. word at the ramp was mostly reds around with a few whites popping up still

We had 25 from 6 pots this

Wed, 2017-12-20 11:15

We had 25 from 6 pots this morning. 11 went back undersized. Only 1 white. howling easterly wasn't fun coming back in!

Mixture of pots being 4 x Jarrah/Pine steel bottom with no extra weight, 1 all Jarrah with 10kg and 1 plastic with 8kg all in 18m of water on the front edge of FFB. No pots moved in the swell.

Moved pots out to 20 metres

Thu, 2017-12-21 19:58

I moved my pots out deeper thinking I was being smart, yeh right.
Half way through pulling my first pot up the winch decides it's had enough and spits the dummy, great.

As a result my pots will be having a prolonged soak until the winch is fixed, there's no way in hell I can pull them up from 20 metres by hand.

As desperate measure I have contemplated using a large float and racing around the ocean letting the float slide down the pot rope as you do on some anchor retrieval devices
however, I don't think I could get a float large enough to lift the pot. Two fish plates and a 5/8 rod bottom makes them pretty heavy.

Oh well maybe some crays will set up house in the pots when the bait has gone.

barrel

Fri, 2017-12-22 09:37

correct, you will need a barrel or similar, place in doubleview sells them for $30

I have a anchor yanka fitting if you want to borrow it that makes the rope only slide one way, perfect for pulling a cray pot

Thank you for your most kind offer

Fri, 2017-12-22 20:40

Solved the problem this morning, a guy at the ramp over heard me telling a fellow boatie of my problem and suggested a way to get the pot up.

He has a winch so he followed me out to the deep pot, pulled up onto it and bobs your uncle 1 pot up with 3 crays and everyone was happy. Problem solved with some clear practical approach to the situation, and yes I know of all the possible repercussions that could have happened, but, they didn't so I'm a happy chappie.

You offer of help was most appreciated Rig.

Moved ours out to 18m inside

Fri, 2017-12-22 08:30

Moved ours out to 18m inside FFB and put on another 20 m of rope.  Could not find any promising looking ground so basically dropped them on the sand.  I thought miles from anything...

Checked them yesterday.

One in the first pot with plenty of weed too so may have missed the sand with that one.

16 in the second pot!  Three kakkas went back.

Arsed it big time!
