***URGENT*** suzuki vs mercury

all,

with the boat show in full swing, i have narrowed down my engine choice to 2 dealers, that have both come in for around the same price (for a new 115hp 4 stroke)

what i need to know is, who has owned a suzuki 4 stroke, AND/OR a mercury 4 stroke, and the pros and cons of each.

i dont want to hear how good someones honda, etec, mariner, yammy, johnson, etc, is, as they are not an option for me now. I know this has been covered on the forums before, and i have searched the topics here, and on other sites, but none are specific to these 2 motors only.

i would like opinions asap, as i want to wrap it up today or tommorrow.

cheers in advance.

go for the best warranty

Thu, 2010-08-12 13:25

go for the best warranty would be my take if they are the same price. Also enquire about servicing costs for the future. As far as each engine goes I think all modern outboards have individual strengths and weaknesses, but overall are pretty good.

good opinion simon.

the suzuki has a 5 year waranty, and the merc a "3 + 2" year waranty.

The real Pros and Cons

Thu, 2010-08-12 13:28

Hey Scotto , something you will need to take into consideration and you may have allready is the dealers reputation.

What they have to offer

after sales service

warranty what is covered and what is not

as John Huges says mate choose the dealer before you choose the car or motor.

I luv my Merc only a 2 strike though

good luck

Thu, 2010-08-12 13:36

i have been up north with both of these motors before but in the 175 sizes. for me the suzi was a clearly better motor. the merc was noisy for a four stroke and the fuel consumption was much better with the suzi. The suzi seemed to give more grunt down low but at WOT the merc seemed to have a better kick. All this is just from what i have seen tho on 2 different boats. Hope this helps.

Cheers Carps

A small thing but look at which one has better guages, also are both nmea 2000 compatible so that you can run them through a gps - my old ETEC ran really well with my lowrance but the new yammie won't talk to it straight up. That said the yammie guages are nice a clear and easy to use for what I want.

Love the power of the Verado, but the ecomomy of the Suzuki.  Also with the Johnzuki, I never got an error message, where as on the Merc, I have had 2 false error messages.

The Suzuki is quieter and lighter.  The Verado is noiser and heavier but does have abit more grunt.

Suzuki. I've owned a verado (oh so sweet)... but been in boats with Merc 4 strokes - would choose a Suzi over the 4 stroke Merc.

Hate to throw a spanner in the works, BUT, have you considered a DI 2 stroke Tongue out

Another thing to think

Thu, 2010-08-12 14:26

Another thing to think about. The Suzuki 140 is the same motor as the 115. Extra horses without extra weight is always a good thing as long as the rig is rated for it.
Virtually every guide and pro fisherman in the NT is running Suzuki. Huge hours and they keep on going with very few problems. Suzuki would be my choice every time.

I had a 70 hp Suzi.

Thu, 2010-08-12 14:52

I had a 70 HP Suzuki for a short time until I sold the boat. I thought it was sweet. Used to get comments at the jetty on how easy it started and how quiet it was. Fuel consumption was very good. However dealership here at the time didn't appear impressive. I imagine that has changed.

I dont know if this is important, but according to the manual you can flush the motor without the motor going. All modern motors may do this. I used to flush the motor this way. Remove the blanking cap at the motor and screw in a 3/4 NPT or NPP adaptor, available from a caravan supplies shop.

Me to

Thu, 2010-08-12 15:25

Been on boats with a 115 Suzi (my fathers in kalbarri) and it was so still you could hear the ocean, 115 Merc seemed more powerful at speed but slower out of the hole and noisy compared with the Suzi (on a mates boat)

go Suzi

And I always thought WOT was "waste of time", now known as "wide open trottle". LOL for the ignorance.

Thu, 2010-08-12 15:35

I've got a 4 stroke suzi on my quintrex and it's a beautul thing. Very quite, economical I will run around all day in a resonable swell and use around 20-25l. Servicing is pricy but gotta expect that with anything marine. It's gonna get a real workout this coming week at Gnaraloo.

Hey Greasemonkey, the 20 hr

Thu, 2010-08-12 21:23

Hey Greasemonkey, the 20 hr service was $460 and the 100 hr service was $946 with 4.5 hrs of labour which was roughly half the cost. Saying that they changed every filter, the impeller, thermostat etc and they went through the boat and trailer as well. Which I told them to do. The boat was originally bought from Allboat Business and they're not too bad up there.

Ryans has just upgraded from a Suzuki 4 stroke 140 (run up the hours on the other and decided to trade in). He got a 175 Suzuki 4 stroke, regained another 5 year warranty, he rates em highly.

well fellas, after much bartering with the dealers, and all your VALUABLE input, i'm stoked to say All Boat Business scored my money on a dead-set, awesome deal, on the 115 suzuki. i even paid a touch more, and got the stainless prop.

just wanted to say thanks to all on here for your opinions, as it means heaps more coming from the members than it does from the salesman.

now to get it on the boat and test her out!!!

cheers again fellas.

should of got a e-tec 4 strokes are just dont have the balls they are no more quieter or fuel efficient they weigh more cost more to service you need to oversize at least a qtr extra horsepower to equal a di 2stroke for performance you have more moving parts to go wrong they are a dirtier running motor than a di hence you cant put a cat converter on a outboard but the suzi is prob the best of the slugs the boys who flog the e-tecs didnt put the point across to you hey

steered away

one of my best mates just returned from barra fishing camp in arnhemland. the camp had  6 tenders, all with etecs, and right from the word go, the camp had nothing but problems with every one of them. so much so, that they (the barra camp) threatened evinrude with legal action, because they couldnt run the business properly with such faulty motors. evinrude ended up sending them 3 brand new motors, for replacements and parts. they were also faulty.

one of the deckies that operated and fixed the tenders, told him that when they worked, they are a fantastic motor, but are simply too highly strung with sensors, filters, monitors, etc. if one of the sensors trips, the computer flips out the whole engine, and you then have to be a computer tech to re-boot.

admittingly, they cop a flogging in a business like that, but as he is a very good mate, and not one to stretch the truth at all, that severly put me off the etecs. that, and they are an extra $2500 on top of what i paid.
