Using Elec reel on 2nd Battery?
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Thu, 2011-06-02 17:02
Going out tomorrow and have got a third battery for my leccy reel and have it on charge over night but suspect it may die at some point in time as it's probably pretty cactus as its extremely old.
I was thinking about using my boats second battery and rather than having to unhook it, was wondering if I just isolate it on the hersey switch would it allow me to use the reel without having any impact on the outboard/electrics etc? I know I should probably just unhook it, but wondering if anyone else does it and its not a problem? I guess each boat may be different, but figure if that battery is not selected then there shouldn't be any impact on anything else...

no worries
just hook it to battery 2, it does not affect the start up, but make sure it is battery 2, should be fine adam, or leave it on dual, and hook it to number 2, that way it keeps getting charge,

hahha
Been using lecs for a bit mate, tomorrow is reds/rankins in the morn on the norm gear and then when the wind drops going to head wide. Hopefully will avoid these and hook into the bottom ones instead, just a lot bigger!

yep selecting battery 1 (if you're hooking up the reel to battery 2) will isolate the battery you're draining so you have a full charge on battery 1 to start the outboard. Other options are leaving it on "both" and having the motor running while drifting. I can't imagine the draw from an elecrtic reel is going to be that much that it will flatten both batteries.
Good luck, hope you find some big rubies

The electric reels take alot
The electric reels take alot of amps, so make sure the battery is isolated. Don't be tempted to use a motorcycle battery as they are too small and the amp draw will kill it in no time. AGMs are the way to go with these.

nah
Just got the new reel today (bull 1000) so will test it just for bottomies tomorrow (unless the fish are really on then I will try it as I'll take one or two jigs with me) Got an old deep cycle battery, will see how it goes.

They don't have much in the
They don't have much in the way of stripes, but I think the white tail edging and that evil spike on the gill plates are the giveaway that its a GB, not a BG.
