UV Protection for Boats

Just wondering what some of the other boat owners on here do to reduce UV damage to their canopies, gauges etc when they are not on the water.

Unfortunately my boat is stored in the full sun, so I've had to try and reduce the exposure through an arrangement of tarps and rags. Works well but doesnt look the best.

Obviously a full cover would be great but I'm a bit scared to get one priced up!

the plastic in the tarps can react with your clears material makes them go all funny and hard to see through.

Fitted Cover

Thu, 2009-03-12 18:54

Fitted cover for my boat was 3K from Boat Canopies WA.  One night of no sleep because of the wind banging the $200 repco job was enought to convince me to spend the $.  Pretty sure I would have lost some paint by now also.  Made from Marine Grade Canvas, covers the entire boat to the chines including the motor.  Takes 5 minutes to cover without any help and 60 seconds to remove.  Deffinatly would spend the $ again.

That's what I thought it might be Tony.

Cheers for the headsup Allrounder. Silver tarp is a UV stable one and has been on for 13 months now with no ill effects.

In the same boat (if you'll pardon the pun! LOL). I haven't had time or money to build a structure and (despite living down in 'Barker') the fordeck of the FRP cuddy gets sun slaughtered. Goodness knows how much polish etc etc I've put on the foredeck and outer gunnels, but the gell coat is no where near as shiny as the hull.

We tried putting a tarp over the whole boat, but we have a gravel driveway and the boat ends up filthy.

For the traga canopy, I've use armall (sp) and that seems to keep it in good condition (after the mandatory good wash down to get the corrosive salt out of the stitching), but find the side clears wear somewhat.

By the way, Rayman lied, there's actually 10 days of sun in the 'old dart' Laughing

Having 2 made

Thu, 2009-03-12 20:47

Having 2 made for clients who live in Karratha, a bit of sun up there, and out of a teflon backed material that does not scratch the gel or paintwork.

Between $2500 and $3000 for 22 foot boats, but have draw strings around the bow, motor, and steps which allows for towing up tp 60kmh.

Had one of these made for a boat I had about 5 years ago and was fantastic, and because it had a drawstring kept 90% of dust out and when stored in strong winds, we live on a hill, kept it very dry and dust free. Being teflon coated gave it good waterproof elements, but I also believe that the quality of the trimmer making the cover it a contributing factor.

Will post a couple of photos when they are finished.

Regards

Andrew

My tinnie

Fri, 2009-03-13 06:12

is only 4.4m so it may not count but my wife bought a commercial cover that covers about 600mm down the hull all round and covers the full length including the motor to halfway down the leg. Don't know what it cost as it was a present but knowing the wife it would not have cost a fortune. The sizes go up to 6.5m and would do for a boat with superstructure up to around 5.5m. U.V. proof and breathes. it is not waterproof 100% but i have 2 poly pipe arches fitted to the rocket launchers either side to keep it taut so 99% of the rain runs off. A good economical option.
