Valentines Day troll with Uncle
Submitted by Rig on Tue, 2012-02-14 15:31
FW member Uncle and I hit Mindarie today for a few hours trolling, we werent going long and Uncles reel screamed off and he was locked in a battle for some time against a stubborn tuna which took him around the boat several times before being brought on board for a quick photo and released. It was a pretty good size for metro estimated at least 12kg It looks like a long tail tuna to me.
We carried on searching for some bait schools or bird activity but didnt really see any or any spanyola's. But we did manage 2 spotted mackeral which was a good result with one coming home for dinner and the other released. Back at the ramp by 11.
Thanks for taking me out Uncle.

Good fish
More than 12kg that baby. Mind you it's refreshing to see someone undersell their fishes weight.

its a bluey green with black spots down the side xrap30
they are magic lures, 2 spotties were on a xrap15 in the prop wash, if the deckie was fishing with rapdancers we may have done better, gave up fishing solunars years ago, allways like after the full moon

Quality
Great fish. Why did you release it though? Are they not good eating? Never had longtail to know otherwise.

Mono
All my trolling gear is mono and helps with the initial impact for sure. I sometimes use jigging gear but back the drag right off for the stike and then gently tighten once the fish is on. Big fish need mono I would say, but anything under 200kgs could be stopped on braid for sure.

Great longtail, one of the most dogged fighting fish going!
Some of the flesh right in near the rib cage makes excellent sashimi, the rest is a bit rank. Shame to kill such a beautiful animal for a very small amount of sashimi, credit Uncle for releasing it to fight another day!!!!!

A braid convert
yeh years back all we trolled with was mono , excellent shock absorber, seemed to set hooks ok.
But----- I like using braid now , its really good for showing just how a lure is running , with its feed back to the rod tip.
I can spot even some small ribbon weed sometimes affecting the tip action , and as said just run a lighter
drag setting.
Also just my opinion braid used for trolling seems to twist less than mono.

Eating
Hey guys in reference to eating longtails....,. I have eaten quite a few much smaller versions and reckon they are fine on the BBQ with a bit of seasoning. I have a few fillets from recent trips in the freezer so no need for me to want to keep this one, and it would have been alot of fillets!
