VHF ANTENNAS - whats yours ?

Looking into a getting 2.4 mtr VHF antenna and was talking to the tech @ WACB in east perth...well he told me that GME and ZCG/Scalar were from the same factory-just diff. trade names. Well I was a bit surprised!! Never had much time for GME stuff. I am looking @ spending the money on a Shakespere Galaxy 5225xt.
So the question is what VHF antenna do you have and are you happy with it's range ??

I had an early GME one which broke. It was the longest they make & and the range was very good at around 20 Nm. I have had to replace the whole unit due to parts not available for the older mounts so I bought the longest GME again. It is however 50mm shorter & has definitely a shorter range which is disappointing..

VHF aerial splitting?
dont want to disrail the topic but I'm also interested in splitting the AM/FM aerial with the VHF.
just put a new VHF radio in the boat as the old one wasn't working and also looking to replace the aerial (as it is showing signs of age) but I already have another separate aerial for the AM/FM radio (which may have caused problems in the past?)
am I better off just splitting the AM/FM aerial to the new VHF? I have also heard that I 'have' to use a splitter off a single aerial rather than two separate aerials as they can interfere with each other? Anyone know what the right way to go is?
current aerial is GME which has worked fine out to 20nm.
cheers

oz74, tried a splitter when I fitted a radio to my tinny and wouldn't recommend one. It significantly decreased the performance of both radios (27meg & AM/FM). I went with separate aerials, no problems. On my offshore rig I have 27meg, VHF and AM/FM radios all with separate aerials and all work fine.

Splitters I am told simply
Splitters I am told simply cannot work effectively as the requirements for effectice transmitting and receiving are completely different
I had my am/fm and VHF on one and couldnt get either VHF or ABC from the islands.Bought a cheap am/fm car antennae about 30cm and both work well now, can get Geraldton easy on VHF and am/fm also

Relax a little fisherman54.
Threads continued discussing VHF radios and aerials
So- go for a GME, and don't split your VHF aerial with AM/FM radio.
there you go- question answered with extra info as well

And yes, GME and scalar are basically the same. A lot of antenna makers do that.
