waikerie south australia

 Hi all,

I have just booked a house boat for 1 week in waikerie south Australia for next June.

I know it is ages away but it has been 5yrs of hard work to get there.

so the plan is to dive over fish the great Australian bite and then a week in south Australia then a week fishing on the way back.

can anyone suggest any good spots that are on the way?

what type of gear I should take for the diverse fishing styles?

best lures for especially the Murray cod ( bucket list fish )?

and types of species I will find and or target on my way?

thanks guys any questions just ask!

Check SA Fisheries website

Check SA Fisheries website regarding closed season for cod (no trolling at all allowed in the closed season) - I think you will be right in June but only going by memory.

On the SA side of the bight I'd suggest stopping at Fowlers bay and having a fish at Scotts Bay for salmon and or a place called the ledge on the Fowlers bay headland, are also a few good beaches and spots west of Fowlers.  June is not the time for the big Mullas over there but there is always a chance.  Hopefully the winds will still be down in June a bit for you (march april may the best months but June often still good).

West of Fowlers bay a 4wd is often needed however there are a few spots you can access with 2wd (can walk to scotts and the ledge but its not a short walk).  Ledge is good for KG, and often snapper and kingies

Smoky Bay jetty (just south of Ceduna) has been rebuilt so is an option with 2wd. odd KG and snook/squid are pretty easy to catch there.

Another good 2wd spot (good spot anway) would be Cactus Beach south of penong.  Fish off the cliff out from the cactus surf break for big salmon and plenty of other possibilities just out from the ledge below the cliff (pretty deep water)  Just need to be careful with the cliff and preferably have a cliff gaff.

Streaky Bay - Backs beach walk about 1 k north of the car park and there are a couple of nice holes/gutters with reef alongside - great salmon beach odd mulloway.

Do you have a 4wd??

cheers Paul

No I don't have a 4wd (yet) but strongly considering getting one!

i will check SA fisheries website tonight I will be grabbing some maps this weekend can you suggest any decent ones?

unfortunatly I only had this date available to take my holidays otherwise I would of had it planned to fit the best fishing times but in saying that I do have 6 months to plan.

Dan

Junes still often pretty good

Fri, 2013-11-29 15:45

Junes still often pretty good as far as the wind goes, the best months for the big Mullas on the bight can also be very blowy and not uncommon to have a week long trip totally blown out at times.  Been a while sine I've been driving land based fishing west of Ceduna but there are plenty of reasonable dirt roads you can do in 2wd still particularly around Fowlers scotts bay and area immediately west of there.  Further west definatelty 4wd for some tracks and to get onto the beaches out near the dog fence and Yalata area.

I did my first trip to Fowlers in around 1987 in an LC GTR Torana and other than getting bogged (tip - stay out of the salt lakes even if they appear dry) once we got to a few places.  It's now opened up a bit more since.  I'm pretty sure you can get pretty close to the western end of Scotts Bay in 2wd nowadays where as the track used to go through the salt lake.  Cabins and on site vans at Flowers. Cactus beach is not probs for 2wd but tent camping only there (the surfers get their combies in ok).

A very skinny me fixing the brakes at Cactus - mullet and all

Maps - just get a decent map of the area, but most of the tracks wont be on there.  Try looking and printing some pics of Google Earth or speaking to the locals when you get there.

Right at the western end of

Sat, 2013-11-30 13:08

Right at the western end of Scotts Beach there is a small funnel shaped beach enclosed by shallow reef, the channel (the funnel bit) leading into this is around two metres wide.  It's only 2-3 metres deep but one memory that will stick in my mind was two huge kingfish (talking 50lb +) swimming back and forth in the deeper water blocking the escape of around 10 medium salmon swimming back and forth very nerviously in about 1 foot of water against the shore.  Threw all sorts of lures and poppers at the kingies on very undergunned salmon rods with nil interest.  Knew we would not have stood a chanced but figured it was going to be fun for about 3 seconds if we hooked up.  Have caught a few salmon at other times and a few KG's in the same hole.  This spot and a few gutters normally at that end of the beach is not that far to walk from the car if 2wd.  really need a quad for the beach as its very soft.

The ledge on the eastern side of the Fowlers bay headland you can access with 4wd or a fair walk if your fit (travel light and take plenty of water).

When younger me and a mate walked into the eastern side of scotts carrying heaps of gear and an medium esky.  Bloody long way over those huge sandhills.  Ended up burying the esky and tackle box there overnight so we didn't have to carry it back to camp just to lug it back again the next day.

Don't dismiss the Fowlers Bay jetty either, big tommies (herring), big squid, big snook, med salmon at times and the odd kingy and mulla are taken off the jetty.  Plenty of sharks in both Fowlers and Scotts.

At Catus there are some good spots off the cliffs or the Pt Sinclair jetty itself.  Just be carfull around the headland as some of the granite boulders are very slippery when wet and if you went in it would be impossible to get out and help aint going to come quickly out there.

cheers
