Warning Warning!

For all those who have shark shields and havent used them yet, be aware they can shock through a wet suit.  I learned this as my mate used his last week and told me, what I wasn't aware of was that I had ampullae of lorenzini on my ball sack! I found this out when i wedged myself into a cray hole(where he was sitting) and the antennae was coiled up underneath my crotch and it hurt....! I couldnt get out of the hole quick enough.  I think it hit me 5 or 6 times!

I have been shocked a few times recently while diving with them at tafe.  Once my classmate took the shield out to a pillar at the woodmans pt ammo jetty, after the dive I went out and picked it up, I turned it off, or so I thought, he hadnt turned it on for the whole dive, So I shocked myself for a good for seconds while I sorted my shit out. Then at a night dive at rotto, I surfaced and the mermaid line was chockas so I surfaced out to the side, had my hand up, the bcd control, and rotating looking up, still didnt see the antenna (its black on this one) and it touched my reg hose, and zapped me which shocked me so much I spat the reg.

As I squirmed about trying to get the reg back I was shocked constantly for about a min and a half.

Other classmates were pissing themselves laughing.

Are they worth it?

Sun, 2010-12-05 16:19

Here we have someone who's been shocked to the point of spitting his reg...in certain situations this might be viewed as life-threatening...all because of a device that may or may not deter sharks. How much risk of attack do SCUBA divers actually bear? Five fatal attacks in WA since 2000: A swimmer, two surfers, and two snorkellers. My view is that a SCUBA diver bumbling around like an idiot (myself included), spewing bubbles left, right and centre, is more of a deterrent than any electrical device might be. Looks nothing like a natural prey item so therefore not worth a look.

Not trying to cause aggro or step on anyone's toes, just making what I feel is a valid inquiry.

I never used to worry about them

Sun, 2010-12-05 16:04

But I know the dolphin dive attack has put the wind up alot of people.  Even last night a FW member told me they havent been diving since and would probably stay out of the water because it was close to where he dived for crabs.  Also where I dive for crabs.  I tell you what though, when we were at rotto doing the dives and I was first into the water and on the end of the mermaid line for nearly 10 mins waiting for the other divers in 28mts,I watched them set the shark shield up and ensured it was on and I was close to it.

Every little bit helps I guess.

Also the zapping through the reg wasnt so bad, I was easily able to reg recover, it was just the 'shock' of getting hit.  It wasnt like I wasnt able to control my limbs or muscle movement.

I hear you, sarcasm...

...can't put a price on "peace of mind". But I look at the track record of people on SCUBA vs sharks and I just don't see any history there, at least in this part of the world. Obviously, if you're on SCUBA and spearfishing, that may slant the odds the other way, but for the typical cray diver, for example, I don't see a significant risk.

It only has to happen once

600 bucks is well worth it given the recent sitings and attacks it's a no brainer for me and like I said if the sharks feel it anything like my bollocks then they'll stay away!

I was talking to a mate

Sun, 2010-12-05 16:42

I was talking to a mate about getting a shark sheild and hanging it a few meters under the boat while fishing for trout up here in Dampier.

On a bad day, we could lose 10 -20 trout due to sharks.  How far is the range of a shark sheild??

I'm a huge fan of the Shark

Sun, 2010-12-05 16:55

I'm a huge fan of the Shark Shield, plus its great piece of mind for my wife and family when I'm out (prob main reason I wear one).  I just drilled a hole in my fin and cable tie the antenae to your fin loosely.  Then just cut the tie when you get back to the boat.

Freedom 7 unit

Sun, 2010-12-05 18:51

Hi Chaps, I use the freedom 7 unit quite often, I've placed a piece of that insolation that they use on the aircon copper pipes on the end and in the middle of the unit. This is to keep it level with my body when diving and it keeps from snagging on the reef as well, I shocked my son by swimming over him... he was not amused.

My honest opinion is that the shield should only be activated if there is a problem shark about, and not switched on all the time. Critical times like when going up to surface and on decending. Otherwise switch the unit off. That my opinion!

Mate you are so wrong!

Sun, 2010-12-05 19:00

There has been shark attacks on people wearing shark shields and in every case the dipsticks wearing them didn't have them switched on! a case in point the young girl a few weeks ago at garden island. I dont think they will come and introduce there selfs before having a go. but each to their own

There is a coroners report

Thu, 2010-12-09 07:42

There is a coroners report from the death of a pro Ab divier in South Oz that employed the same methodology you are using. If a white is on an attack run it wont deter them, they deter them before they get to that stage when you wont see them as they are scoping you out. That's when they feel the discomfort & move on. DO a google search on the report is a very interesting read.

i couldnt think of too many

Wed, 2010-12-08 22:34

i couldnt think of too many scarier situations than looking up to see a flash of a shark passing by. I just bought a freedom 7. Not for the fact that I've seen anything that has prompted me to rush out and order one but when I'm on the bottom, I feel as safe as walking down the street. But when I'm bobbing around at 5 meters, you can't tell me you arent'keeping an eye out for the shadows in the distance. Ive seen too many BIG ENOUGH sharks out fishing to know they are only a few seconds away!

They bloody work!

Sun, 2010-12-12 19:11

This is just my opinion, they work! I used to spear a fish or two and move before the sharks arrived. Since wearing a shield, I haven't seen another shark close to us, and we have shot several trout between us in the same area without any thoughts of moving.
Anybody who switches it off is defeating the purpose!!! It's like putting a seltbelt over yourself and not buckling....why bother???

I did my backward roll of the boat today and got a few zaps in the back of my head....it wakes you up quick, we where also told a few seconds before we went in there was a six footer in the area...didn't see it though.
