wasted or not

here is something that has bugged me for quite some time.every time i go into my local IGA store down south i always have a look in the fish section.I remember one particular day the bloke behind the counter was just about trying to give the fish away as it had obviously come to its used by date.just last week looking again was a decent dhu there that i reckon wold have gone 8 kilo and was looking like it was just about at its used by date .My question is what happens with all this fish they dont sell, is it turned into cat food ,fertilizer that i dont know ,but i think its a great waste of fish that must go on all over this state,i know by catching my own at least it dont get wasted.

shameful
with all the bans and bag limits imposed on the recreational fisherman perhaps they should be looking elsewhere at why the fish stocks are apparently declining.Do the pros have to catch so much fish if heaps of it ends up in the bin at the end of the day.

Pros
You cannot blame the pros for a fish not getting sold by a shop before its use by date.
All the pro does is pack it in an ice box and put it on a truck to the markets, from there on its out of his hands what happens to it or where it goes once its sold. End of story as far as he's concerned.

It would only account for a
It would only account for a very small percentage that gets discarded.
Would make great burley mix if they were "giving it away"

We could then say the same
We could then say the same with every perishable item.
So why get knickers in a knot, because its a Dhu fish? Bet you would not be saying that if it was a sand whiting or a herring.

Pure greed.
Rather than lower the price a bit to make sure everything gets sold, the retailer is keeping it (the price) nice and high to maximise profit. No big deal if it doesn't get sold and therefore goes into the bin...simply write it off as a loss.

I wonder how many of us would
I wonder how many of us would keep fish that we have caught in the freezer longer than the prescribed storage (using the time line that shops have to abide by).
Yes its a sorry sight seeing all these fish go to waste, but think if you approached the manager and offered him a small (cash) fee for the fish then using it as a kick ass burley............. I have asked a local fish shop for their off cuts which I minced into small bits and froze them in tennis ball size cubes to be used as burley later down the track.

Not sure they can do anything other than bin....
It would be against regulations to give the fish away or sell it for tuppence when it reaches its use-by date. Who is going to make sure that the buyer doesn't eat the fish?
Sadly, in this world retailers stock up for perceived demands. If their expectations are not met then regulations state that the items are to be destroyed. It's not just fish, it's everything perishable!
Oh, and BTW, I have NEVER seen Duies on sale at IGA. I've seen some pretty ugly seafood but never a dhuie.

the shops will throw out
the shops will throw out everything that is out of code. due to the regulations they cant even give food that is still good (dry packet stuff) to the charities that provide for the less frotunate . even the products weather they are perishable or not that have damaged packaging will end up in a landfill somewhere. i have see some great wastes of stuff.

This really shits me
This really shits me especially with all the efforts that go into restricting bag limits etc. It's amazing the what the commercial sector get away with. I do get my knickers in a knot Michael Yoni when such a heavily protected and governed species is just thrown in the bin.... it's not a loaf of bread. i also don't like to see any food go to waste when it can be feed the under privelliged.

They should be forced to discount at lest two days before expiry.

I would personally like to
I would personally like to see the price high and it doesn't sell. If you sell 3 a week a $100 and throw away 1, my opinion is less Dhui will be caught to eat than if you sell 100 a week at $20 cause they were sold discounted. Got to remember that it's not the pro's fault. If a retailer wants to buy it, the demand to hunt them is on. Sad to see it wasted, but as rec fishermen, I'm sure we are all guilty of bringing up fish too fast, hooks too deep, busting off gear attached to the fish while they are still swimming or being sharked and it's another day.
My opinion again, is i think we should all try to educate, donate time and help fisheries however possible to keep our fry, small fish and breeding fish being wiped out. Once they are legal size, they are legal game. I know I don't do enough myself but I do pull over to pick up floating bags when I see them and pick up bottles/ rubbish off the bottom when diving - especially around Rotto.
Adam - Were you into fish farming at some stage in your career? Why does nobody farm Dhui's? Seems to be sort after meat and being it's a small part of the wrold they live in, might be a good market world wide.

Have worked and managed
Have worked and managed supermarkets for the last 8 years(not anymore tho) and yes it is disgusting the amount of food that gets wasted, It really comes down having disciplened department managers and unfortunately they are hard to come by, not sticking up for it but if some one wasted a full dhufish you would get reemed by the boss, nothing gets written of as a loss in a supermarket and every cost is managed as percentages and every dolar in the bin is a 100% of a dolar off your bottom line.
The supermarket in question should have been on the ball and if concerned raise the issue.
Unfortunately alot of departments are run and managed by young kids and its hell trying to get through to them that every piece of livestock wasted is a life wasted. and as a fisherman I to always asked myself the same question we all get up in arms if a live fish floats on the surface without a release weight but shops and commercial businesses waste a phenominal amount of fish and livestock.
Your average large scale supermarket would throw out approx 8k a week and thinking that a loaded shopping trolley bursting would be about $400 thats around 20 trolleys of food in the bin!

Just out of curiousity does
Just out of curiousity does anyone know what the commercial qouta/limit is for Dhuie? I can see your point Oracle and it's a good one but there has to be a better system than seeing good fish thrown out.

ends up on the managers dinner plate
they wouldnt throw out a dhufish. thats why its not marked down, if it doesnt sell by a date its picked up by the boss.
even if it does make the bin the army of bin rumages will dig it out and lightly batter it that night.
i worked supermarkets parttime whilst going through uni. the manager regularly had me find all the dented pet food cans and box them up for him, also liked me dropping a few of the undented ones!!
fresh produce manager loved it when the mangoes got black spot and the lychees overripe. straight into a box and into the back of his car.
best one was easter eggs. I can tell you all those broken ones do not make it into the bin.
heres a trick, drop an easter egg in the isle at coles and watch the face of the grocery assistant.
Cheers

No dinner mate
I was a manager at a large supermarket until recently. It does not end up on our dinner plate. Every possible course of action is taken to sell our product. It begins with precise ordering, (I personally prefer to run out of something and raincheck it for customers rather than see it go to waste) If we do miscalculate out orders we begin with a 10% markdown 2 days before it is due to be wasted. It continues down to 33% followed by 66%. The rules of the big bosses is to never go below that 66% markdown. I have been known to bend the rules. If that fish is used by the next day and I know no-one will buy it I will offer it at a further reduced price if a customer buys something else. Or even if they only want 2 pieces and there are 3 left I'll usually chuck in that last one. Way against company policy but that companys shit house anyway hence the "until recently". I hate to see waste not only because I would cop a beating from a higher boss (who is only concern is the dollars) but to see something has died for nothing really gets to me. All my team knew there was hell to pay if anything went in that bin

Iga busso had a couple of
Iga busso had a couple of monster coral trout sitting on ice going for about 28 bucks a kilo unfilleted. when i asked the guy what they weighed, he said " we weighed the biggest one a cpl of days ago and he went 5.8 kilo" So if the coral trout spends a day at sea a day travelling down from pt samson and a few days sitting in the window on ice, how long are they actually allowed to keep fish for on a bed of ice before having to get rid of it?
