Western Australian Shack Settlements

As a work project, I need to evaluate issues surrounding shack settlements in WA.  I have fond memories of regularly visiting my grandparents shack at Hawley Beach in Tasmania when I was a kid and the fishing, diving, outdoors and sense of “shack community”.

Since moving to WA, I have read a lot of posts on this forum to learn, contribute where I can, and really respect a lot of opinions put forward by members.  I would value member's views about shack settlements in general.  As always, there is the good, the bad and the ugly but all is relevant to my research.

Please feel free to provide your opinion by comment, or PM me if you want to express “private” views.

I encourage your thoughts and thank you in advance.

Mick

Where do you start

All along the coast from Denmark through to the Donnelly river there are groups of shacks that have been there for over 60 years that I know of. My fathers family had one in Windy Harbour some seventy years ago, don't know what happened to that.
Father and Uncle George pulled down an old mill house in Pemberton and carted it the 11 mile down the Donnelly and erected it, was either the 2nd or 3rd one there, passed on to cousin Michael and don't know who has possession of it now that he has died.

Here in Carnarvon, we, Carnarvon Sea Rescue, were bequeathed one of the shacks up at the Blowholes settlement for use as a sub base in the event of a major rescue operation in the area if needed. With new regulations trying to be enacted involving shifting the shacks back further away from the beach to above the supposed new high water mark????? and then being exposed to the strong winds instead of sheltered like they are now. We have been guaranteed a block when this is finalised and proposed to erect a building that will contain a jet ski for rapid response for someone getting washed off the rocks along the Quobba coast and a trailer set up for fire fighting.

I take it you have read this report on the heritage value of grey and wedge done in 2013, makes some good points , probally lost on pollys though,

It doesnt mention votes anywhere!

Beach shacks were, when you think about the first things erected by white man many moons ago, e.g putting up a shelter when you  dont own the land.

This on the first landing at Albany----

Arriving at King George's Sound on 25 December 1826, Lockyer landed ashore early the next day and commenced a survey of the area. On 30 December the troops and prisoners were disembarked, setting up camp and landing stores.  A camp aye? , a xmas camp , now thats bloody stralian right there! wonder if old locky had a brew around the campfire, gazed over the ocean , and though , mm wonder if its a bit early for salmon? haha.

Beach shacks have probally stretched from  Isralite bay to the ord at some time or another , and are a huge mainly forgotten piece of our history.

Back in the early eightys when I was younger and maybe more of a romantic , I dreamed of travelling , photographing and writing the history of these shacks, before

they dissappeared, but it was not to be, mores the pity.

good luck mate.

Helped a mate build one up

Thu, 2015-05-07 18:42

Helped a mate build one up at Leeman 25 years ago, just past Gumtree bay. Some of the best days of my younger life up there. There was probably only 5 or 6 shacks where we were, Beagle is was just to the SW of us. The fishing and diving was insane and some weekends all the people from the shacks along there would get together for drinks etc. It all ended when CALM ordered them taken down, the shire didn't have a problem and my mate was paying $500 a year in fees to them from memory. I'll never forget those times, just good clean honest fun.
