Hi Guys
New to the site. Looking great so far. Im off to Westmoore Island in 2 weeks. Anyone been there before? Got any suggestions as to what kind of gear to take with me? Where are the best land based spots on the island?
Cheers

queenies on both east and
queenies on both east and western ends depending on which way the tide is running. The reefs surrounding the island get quite shallow on the low tides but seems to hold the usual- trevs, queenies etc. Some small poppers and metal slices will suit.

Just spoke to Westmoore as I had a mate Russell working there
She said they somehow will work it out so youll get an offshore fish.
From shore slices, popper and there is rock pools where you can use bait and plastic to get all sorts.
Offshore the red head lures seem to be the best, whichever brand.
But she told me she just emailed you and just ring them and ask. Seem a good solution.

Westmoore island is just off
Westmoore island is just off the Pilbara coast half way between hedland and Karratha. It was previously a pearl farm but is now being used as a fishing lodge.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

Fishing Nirvana??
Im hoping that Westmoore becomes a fishing nirvana and my favourite place to wet a line. Ive been to the Mackerals, Montebellos, Garth's Rock at Quobba and our secret kingie spot in Hedland...Just hope the weather is perfect and that i have to beat the fish off with a stick...lol

not a pinch on the
not a pinch on the Montebello's mate but it's not 50nm from the ramp either! The bonus that Westmoore can offer is a bed and shower, plus barra and threadies and only 6-7nm from the nearest ramp.
Hope the weather is good!

Duhh Yewie
Duuhh Yewiefish..We fish the same 'secret spot'..lol..
Lucky Tim...The Montes is a great spot but like you said a long way from a boat ramp and im prone to 'burlying up' on a boat. When I was at the Montes, the best fun I had was sitting at the back of the houseboat catching boney herring with a bait jig. The boys used them as bait and cleaned up on snapper. I paid all that money and spent heaps buying gear only to be seasick for most of the trip there.
Brucesta...The mackerals are alot of fun but its been hit hard close in and you have to go furthur out to get some really decent fish. There is a spot called Rosealie shoals i think. When conditions are right..it GOES OFF! Im sure someone will correct me if i got the name wrong. Research is always a good idea.

Further out for me is no
Further out for me is no worries Sean66 and i did actually have some good sucess in close at the macks as well but for the price to stay there vs westmoore island i'm i little sceptical but i will visit the area and probably just camp somewhere and experience the fishing as it's probably only a 30 min boat ride on a good day to West Moore from Pt Samson. i look forward to the report especially from the creeks and out wide in the deeper stuff.

Disappointing :(
Well my expectations of the fishing at Westmoore were not met. The fishing was very disappointing. It was too windy most days and the lack of our own RST made things worse. However...The facilities are fantastic, the crew on the island are a great bunch of people. They tried their best to make our trip a memorable one. They just couldnt calm the wind or make the fish bite.
I imagined myself walking along the beach casting lures/poppers at hordes of trevs and queenies. Alas I only saw 1 small trev caught off the beach and one small queenie while trolling between the islands. Was it the neap tides or full moon or just our bad luck? Who knows?
We did manage to get out on one charter, though it was windy and rough. I was lucky not to be chum master for the rest of the crew but I got soaking wet getting there and coming back. Tony (skipper) put us on some good spots. We caught 4 red emperors, a nice chinaman cod and the usual mix of snapper and reef fish. Only 1 coral trout but too small.
Sharks seem to be the main species caught while we were there. I got my first ever shark on a popper while walking around Sandy Island. As soon as the popper hit the water and I 'brought it to life', you could see the dark torpedo shapes coming in to take a look. The little buggers! I also had fun sitting on the back of the charter boat, Able Tasman while it was moored off the island. Due to the windy conditions, I managed to get a 'lift' to the Tasman. Armed with some while baits, balloons, and TLD 25 with 15kg pretest, I floated baits off the back. again...SHARKS! Dammit!
Despite the poor fishing, I can safely say that I had a good time. It was relaxing to just sit on the verandah with a cold drink in my hand and gaze at the mainland in the distance. The food was great (and here I was expecting to lose weight), the other people we met were a 'hoot' to be with and the folks that run the lodge made it all a memorable experience.
Needless to say,we have made a tentative booking for July 2012. Dylan the deckie has promised us that this is a much better time for fishing and its much calmer (how's your wrist Dylan?). So, the countdown has started to our next adventure to Westmoore Island Fishing Lodge. Bring on the trevs, queenies and anthing else the island has to offer. In the meantime, I have to make do with mulloway at my 'secret' spot in Hedland. Would you believe it but all Im getting there are sharks as well...Grrrr.
Tight lines everyone.
Sean :)

Return to Westmoore Island
Well as promised last year, I am about to return to Westmoore Island. Ive been informed that its still windy in the morning but glasses off in the afternoon. Still no RST but Im looking forward to relaxing, enjoying the facilities and hopfully doing some damage to the trevs and queenies off the beach. Will report back on my return.
PS..has anyone else been there recently? How was it?
Cheers.
