What line to put on a reefmaster winch ?

Just got a couple of used Alvey Reefmaster deck winches. Not sure what line to put on them. Have been told to use heavy ( 200lb+) mono backing and then fill it with 80 or 120lb sufix K - Braid. The K braid only comes in 200mtr lengths ( as far as I know ) and I was hopefully going to use the winches for deep water 200 - 500 mtrs in local water and off Exmouth . The only other line i could find in that sort of length that was not too thin to handle was dacron. If anyone uses a winch , what sort of line do you use or suggest. Any help would be great.

Bluewater have line on their website called YGK Super Top, purpose made for winches and handlines., maybe have a look at that. From memory we used to use dacron, and that worked well.

We sell YGK Super Top in 600m lengths which is perfect for deepwater winch work. The diameter is smaller/thinner than Sufix K-braid so you stay on the bottom more often especially with current.

Priced the same as the big guys but FW discount apply also, PM us if we can help.

I think the ones on my mates boat were loaded with a daacron line.  looks a bit like a small ventian blind cord...

They worked real well in over 100 meters.  No effort to pull up a double header GT (over the meter mark) and a very large pinky.

They worked so well in fact we only had oner drift on that spot that day with two winches we managed our quotoa's with only three drops each and had to come in...

old fart has on ours Fuji moulded braid line, think we've got about 500 meters on each winch, our winches are alvey reef masters.  Don't know if you can buy it anymore as the factory burnt down in Japan, but old fart thinks he read some where that somebody else has started making the moulded line, very strong.  Don't know if its called anything as than Fuji Moulded Braid.  He's been snagged a few times but never lost line or gear.

Thanks for all the info. It's a bit of a tradeoff between a line that is thin enough to hold the bottom and thick enough to hold in the hand without getting cut.
