I went in feb last year for 3 weeks had a great time .watch out for bag slashers they are very good and fast you wont know that they have done it.
when bartering they will give you a price in usa dollars ,ask how much in dong and you find that it will be cheaper than the usa dollar price they origanally gave you .then half that amount again and you will get close to a price.
Shirts 2 - 3 dollars aus
try all the street venders for food they are great and cheea to eat at, only drink bottled water though.
hope this helps have a great time .
where you doing, the whole country.

Spent 3 weeks over there a few years ago, did north to south, an amazing country.
Must do things to do and see would be the Chu Chi tunnels, mekong delta, markets in Saigon whilst down south. Also we found this bar in Saigon that was owned by an aussie dude from the gold coast he was very helpful with where to go and where to not go the bar had all these AFL,Rugby League jumpers hanging on the walls & cheap beer. In the middle of country you have Hoian, its just south of Danang (China Beach as the yanks called it) this place very laid back in comparison to Saigon, good place to get your tailor made clothing & foot ware. again cheap beer. a little further north you have Hue it has a lot of history there with this big Palace that dates back years, can't remember the name of it.
Then you have Hanoi, very big chinese influence compared down south & you can go and see Uncle Ho in his little glass cabinet & Halon bay is a must to do.
We had a couple of home stays, which I recommend to do if you get a chance.
And as mentioned deal in the dong, much cheaper us dollar.
Have fun, I would go back there again.

Went there in 95 to the north, couple of tips, don't over haggle with the locals, still haggle but don't be overkill (we got chased with knives on our school trip) Also, don't try and take photos of your school teachers drunk and get the wrong room and take photos of a Japanese businessman with 2 prostitutes - the local door guards with AK's at certain hotels aren't very understanding of your mistake! LOL
Apart from that, cool country, not sure if the water puppetry theatre is still going, but if it is, go and see it, waayyy cool. Also stay away from the cobra penis vodka, its crazy stuff! LOL.
Sure you'll have a great time.
