What Rod & How Much Braid

I just bought a little Shimano Sienna FD1000 Reel.

How much braid will this take @ 4lb??

Also, I'm looking for a 6ft 6 Rod 1-3 kg.

Any suggestions

It should easily take 150m of 0.4 PE braid.

It says it should hold 247m of 1kg line (mono) So definately a 150m spool of 4lb braid (providing its not super thick).

What sort of action are you looking for in the rod? and what sort of budget ?

well it takes 140 yards of 4lb mono so not too sure about braid, probly an extra 30+ metres?

as for the rod, have a look at the shimano starlo stix, they come in close to 6'6 to 7ft and are rated 1-3kg or 2-4 depending on which one you prefer, the starlo stix will suit your reel perfectly in my opinion and there quite cheap aswell.

Flangies, I'm targetting

Wed, 2010-05-26 20:41

Flangies, I'm targetting Bream, Flathead etc in the Swan or Estuary. I already have a 7ft Shimano SSS with a 2500 Shimano Sienna with 8lb Platypus Super 100 mono. I was looking to get something a little smaller, say 6ft 6in equiped with the 1000 and to try 4lb braid. Never used braid before.

Budget around $100 - $120 for the rod alone.

Johnyy Boi, I saw the Starlo Stix Xtream Spin 662 which is 1-3 kg & has a lure weight of 2-8g in the Shimano 2010 Catalogue. Yeh looks like it could be the go. As you can see above, I already have the Shimano SSS in the 7ft size, which appears to be the same as the comparable Catana in specs.

I'm also open to all ideas, as also have a 7ft Daiwa Exceller 702MLFS equiped with a Daiwa Regal Xia 2500. This combo appears to be a lot heavier than the Shimano SSS.

I know the Shimano Sienna 2500 is 255g in weight & the Regal Xia 2500 is 325g. Pound for pound, are Diawa reels heavier than Shimano????? The Sienna has 4 ball bearings and the Regal, 10. Is this the difference???

Shimano and daiwa sizes

Thu, 2010-05-27 10:54

Shimano and daiwa sizes aren't quite the same so a 4000 reel from each for example could vary a bit in size/weight/line capacity. I think a 3000 daiwa is probably a closer size to a 4000 shimano. It depends on models too as the luvias/exist/etc or the Stella are lighter than other models of the same size in the same brand.

I'm using a sic stik pro 1-3kg and quite happy with it. Has a nice 'flicky' tip (not sloppy though, hard to explain without trying out. Though the 2-4 didn't seem to have it). Bends heaps on light drag too which makes it fun.

If a reel can fit 150m of 4lb mono it should hold 300+ of 4lb braid but as always depends on the braid. Will fit 150m no prob regardless of brand (and you can prob fit 150lb+ of 10lb or more still)

Staying out of the shimano

Wed, 2010-05-26 20:54

Staying out of the shimano vs daiwa here lol.

I'd suggest the pfleuger trion 1-3kg with 6lb braid . That 2lb will be a hell of alot more insurance especially if new to braid. 4lb doesn't show much mercy.

You can pick up a spool of 6lb sunline super pe (a lot of guys on here rate it highly) For about 39$ or if from the sponsors, a bit cheaper.

6lb will still fit the whole spool on the 1000 size and will last a bit longer too.

The Trion rods are rated very highly for the price, clean crisp action and very sensitive blank. I'm pretty sure both site sponsors stock them and a whole range of breaming rods. Might be just a case of taking the reel in and sticking the reel on and giving it a feel. + you'll save a bit of money from your fishwrecked discount. (might be enough for a couple of lures)

Hope this helps

Worth looking around as I've

Thu, 2010-05-27 15:32

Worth looking around as I've seen them on special for a fair bit off at one of those stores that's a third fishing.

Got mine at Oceanside and had the tip snap and they sorted out everything really quick. Don't get that at the other place (or a worthwhile recommendation in the first place!)

Back to original q: remember most braid brands vary in actual vs rated strain and also diameter. Eg fireline says it's the strongest but that's cause they massively underrate the line rating. So 4Lb fireline might be much thicker than an actual braid and probably break 10lb+ with the right knots. If you haven't used braid much it's worth reading up on knots and handling as well.

Thanks everyone for the

Thanks everyone for the advice.

I'll take the reel into one of the sponsors sites and try them out on the rods.

I haven't been online for a couple of days & I took my reel into one of those stores that's a third fishing only yesterday. Was very disappointed to say the least. I ended up with 4lb Stren Microfuse in Glacier Blue. Initially they had no backing out the back. They ended up taking some cheap 6lb mono line off the shelf. I also asked some questions about rods and the guy there said "Oh you need to speak to ??, but he's not here at the moment.

The whole experience didn't have me leaving the store with confidence to say the least. Never Again !!

We stock a variety of rods

Sat, 2010-05-29 08:24

We stock a variety of rods to suit 1-3kg class and are always happy to help out and pass on informations.

I take it you havent found a rod yet.

As Flangies pointed out, the Pflueger Trion is a lot of rod for the money.

I'd recommend the 6'6" 2-4kg as opposed to the 1-3kg. They are quite light in the tip but you also dont want it to be too soft in the tip, hence the heavier 2-4kg.

Drop by the store with the reel and try it out on the rod.
