What statement, expression, saying made a change to you?

We come across whitty retorts, profound historical and contemporary sayings, glib raconteurs and spur of the moment untterances. Amongst these, what was the ONE that made a difference to how you approach life?

For me it was:

Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift, that's why they call it THE PRESENT.

Get off your butt

Wed, 2007-12-05 19:22

I was slacking off one school holidays, just sitting around doing nothing. New there was no swell, which was a good reason not to go surfing or fishing. My old man came home and said that if I didn't get off my ass he was going to kick me so hard there that I would spend the rest of the holidays pulling his thong out of my butt.
So I went fishing, and on a day which looked like being a waste of time for fishing, I hooked my first kingfish.
All the best Colin Hay

Goatch  - Yes I've read that many times across your posts and laugh every time! Oh! Downloaded youe VID yesterday - great stuff - what an ordeal!

Salmo - I like that one too - makes sense for all the wrong reasons

This expression didn't change my life - but I'm fond of often requoting it:

The Definition of Insanity is expecting a different result from the same repeated process.

You could actually say that

Thu, 2007-12-06 06:56

You could actually say that an 'eliptical circle; is an oxymoron - eleiptical means - oval - like the earths rotation around the sun - it's a distorted circle (apahealeon/perihealeon(sp)), or the moon around the earth - (apogee/perigee).

Yup Goatch - good attititude!

Bit of a mouthfull but roughly translates to "Don't let the bastards grind you down'

Oh and the important one, which allows me to deal with all of life's little crisis ........" f*ck it "

Yup love that expression

Yup love that expression Jody!

Whilst we are extolling latin, there's also

Carpe Diem - Seize the Day
Carpe Noctem - Seize the Night
absit iniuria verbis - let injury by words be absent

and one of my favourites:

post hoc ergo propter hoc - after this, therefore because of this - because of this" A logical fallacy where one assumes that one thing happening after another thing means that the first thing caused the second. The title of a West Wing episode.

Adam - saw elsewhere an expression - If you are argueing with an idiot, make sure they're not similarly occupied.

LMAO Noha - that IS good - and typical Bundy (one of the few american shows I find funny).

Hi Ya,

"One day my boat will come in and I'll be at the airport"

"If you don't know you don't know, then you don't know you don't know and if you don't know you don't know then you don't know what to ask to find out."

aAd after recent events (well, 2 years ago) "Any day I wake up is a good day and any day I go to bed is a beter one."

Cheers.

Ody mate, I need to two panadol after that second one

I also like this one:

Commonsense - Every one HAS it, but there's precious little OF it.

As words go, I reckon it's the greatest contemporary misnomer in the English language.
